Finally some reprieve..... Heading into the Boundary Waters via the end of the Gunflint trail tomorrow morning. Can't wait to get out and explore, fish for walleyes and look for morels. Ease my soul and center my spirit . It's been a long time coming for a trip like this. Just my gear, friends and loved ones, and no cell phone service in the most pristine area of the country arguably. I'll leave you this quote from Henry David Thoreau..... I'll be bringing a first edition copy from 1927 of Henry David Thoreau's journals to share with some younger folks out on the trail. And this is precisely why..........

"We need the tonic of wildness... At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable".

Weekend wild mushroom meals with a loved one is such a treat, and a humbling reminder as to why I love foraging so dearly.....

Was able to bring home some black trumpets, chanterelles and hedgehogs again over the weekend. It's so nice to get out into the woods and see them alive and well with all this rain we are getting. A much needed season after a couple of underwhelming summers.

Chanterelles with sauteed onion and parsley poured over a venison steak that was gifted to me, and on a hearty toast with roasted garlic and goat cheese. Yum. The black trumpets were folded into an omelette in the morning with the leftover venison and goat cheese. Absolutely delicious.

Hope everyone is having fun out there. If you're new to foraging and are putting in the leg work there's a good chance this will be your year. Get out there and enjoy the bounty! If I don't see you here,🌲🍄 I'll see you in the woods 🍄🌲

Well folks.....we are definitely not in a drought this year and the woods are already alive with beautiful and delicious summer mushrooms. Went out to take an early look and was able to come across some wonderful kings. I left the chanterelles to grow mostly but picked some perfect buttons and a few black trumpets to make a tasty risotto. Dinner was so good I forgot to take pictures, but it's always such a treat to smother a good steak with as many porcini as you can eat and the chanterelle risotto was to die for 🤤.... Also never count out the power of a simple wild mushroom toast made with a good asiago bread, kings sauteed in butter, some diced shallots and fresh parsley. It felt good to bring something wonderful home from the woods again and feed it to folks I love and care about. This is what it's all about people. Enjoy the bounty this rainy season is bringing us my friends, and as always......

We now return to our regularly scheduled program.......

Hello my dear and faithful forest friends. It's been some time.......I hope you've found yourself enjoying the woods and waters wherever you call home this spring, and are ready for what I believe may be a stellar summer foraging season 😃

As for today........

Happy summer solstice ☀️

Chanterelles are pining. If the rain continues I suspect we will have a fun season for some of my summer favorites😁🍄 I'm seeing alot of species a little early this year, and that's a great sign for what I hope is to follow....

The solstice reminds us of the return of life and light, and the promise of ever evolving change as we rotate through this time and space. Let us get out into our woods and waters and enjoy it. Let's dig our fingers into the fruit of the earth and connect to it. I wish you all the best of luck during this summers wild food foraging season and look forward to sharing with you again and adding new content and media... Have fun and find yourself while you feed yourself out there!!

Hedgies, Trumpets, and King's oh my
👀🍄🌲........As we approach the sweltering hazy days of peak summer mushroom season I'm reminded of the wonders of all nature and it's imperative lessons and endless opportunity for life it holds, and wonder why we who are desperately trying to rewild do what we do.
My reason is as long as the road north twords the northern nowhere pine stands........ But I suppose this is as good as reason as any. It's beautiful. Get out there and revel in it folks...... I'll see you in the woods .

And now folks, we return to our regularly scheduled programming. Starting our summer season off with a bang is the beautiful and equally deliciously unique golden Chanterelle mushroom.

I have to admit, my morel season was.......meh.
Picked a few pounds ate a few more than that which I'll always feel blessed to do, anything you can bring full circle from the forest, to your table, and share with those you care for will always carry thankfulness and humility....

However the beginning to spring mushrooms left meet in anxious wait of and hopeful for a good summer season and the possibility of returning to the Northern Norway Pine and seeing the fields of gold once again. I went for an afternoon of lazing about in my hammock and tossing one of Great Grandpa's fishing lures around the shoreline, it sure was a beautiful day here in the Minnesota woods and waters.

Low and behold, I found some baby gold!!!

Now....don't stub your toe running out the door and stomping into your potential local mushroom spot only to find you're sweating in your baskets empty I never bother looking before July 4th but if this is signs of things to come I'll keep my head down, and the grill on.

Get ready Minnesota, here it comes!

It's time folks.

Minnesota wilds and friends got on board early this week in my "check first" spot and have picked a few times since then. It's flushing out there.....but it's slow. Low temps and easing into the solid upper 70s isnt so bad, but it's crispy out there and we need some good rainfall and the gradually warming temps will make for a great season. We. Need. Rain.

Certainly is great to be able to get my eyes on them again and hear them in the frying pan along with fresh ramps. It's unequivocally the smell, taste, and sounds of spring. And it's delicious of course which seems to be the bonus and not the main course. The spring treasure hunt is on everyone, get out there and have fun!

If you see me out there give a holler and a wave I'm pretty sure the forest counts as social distancing 😂

On the workbench @ Minnesota Wilds HQ. Something completely new but long dreamed about for me. First attempt at a natural fur on tanning process used for thousands of years with a pronghorn pelt gifted to me to practice with after a close friends successful South Dakota hunt. Intimidating to start but very excited to see how the process comes out and to fail learn and try again this is one of the things I wanted to do for a while to close the circle of primitive and natural skills I've been learning over the years in a mission to rewild myself and live a happy, humble, and simpler life with a meaningful connection with earth, it's resources, and our relationship to them. It's come to be that time folks, the cold and dark are lurking here in the Midwest. Seasonal depression can be a real thing for a lot of people here, now is the season to readjust your focus and switch to harvesting other resources.......For me, that means meat, and usually starts with fall turkey or duck hunting before big game season.

Let's talk about this past late April through September.....

Absolutely the BEST mushroom/foraging season of my young journey into rewilding the way I eat and live. Hands down the best local morel hunting I've experienced so far, Porcini were more plentiful than I've ever picked, and even the far northern pine forests released some of their golden bounty for me and my brother Brad whom I was so thankful got to experience the hunt in that way and setting with me. I'll never forget that trip man, and how it felt to drive a bald 🦅😂.....

Now, such as in life, it's time for a quick and rapid change, to our environment and how we react to it. It time to harvest protein. This year the first thankful meal was provided by the strange early and overly warm start to duck hunting for the fall.

I'll never get sick of these birds, hunting them or eating them. Local Mallards fed on corn beats a steak on its worse day for me, and obtaining that meal is its own adventure and has become my life's passion. Ever so grateful to have friends who have completely taken me under their wings for waterfowl hunting and seem to make sure my freezer is never empty (No matter how accurate I may shoot that day!). Thanks again Ryan Verkennis and Wayde Pariseau for always letting me tag along. Deer hunting is next.
