What started as a hobby in 2015, Brick Yard Bee Company is now a family-run cottage food operation that provides local honey and beeswax products. Backyard beekeeping in an urban area has allowed us to entertain a new burgeoning hobby. A few products you can make from beeswax include candles, soaps, and lotions (there's a huge list beyond that though!). Beeswax can also be used to repair furniture or floor scratches, smooth out your unruly beard or make your own beeswax crayons. I haven't tried making the crayons yet but they're on the list for Christmas presents!

With all of this weather we haven't had a chance to check on our hives in a few weeks. But we're excited to see how much honey our girls have built up lately. Summer honey is probably my favorite season of honey with the light, floral taste of St. Pete "wildflowers". One thing I learned recently is that honey produced within a city is typically labeled as "wildflower honey". Makes sense after thinking about it considering the bees are gathering from every type of flower available, not just clover, alfalfa, orange blossoms. Mind blown!

Last weekend we split our productive hive. This Friday we're going to check to see if queen cells have formed in the hive without a queen. I keep peeking over the fence to see if bees are entering and exiting the queenless hive and so far so good. Fingers crossed that we'll soon have another hive up and running.
