A better bourbon experience starts before the first real sip.
Tasting bourbon is not about overcomplicating the moment. It is about slowing down enough to notice what makes each pour distinct.
Start by looking at the bourbon in the glass. Pay attention to the color and clarity. Rich amber or deeper copper tones can hint at character, age influence, and barrel presence.
Next, bring the glass to your nose before sipping. A good bourbon can reveal layers like vanilla, caramel, oak, spice, smoke, or even subtle sweetness before it ever touches your palate.
Then take a small first sip. Let it coat your mouth instead of rushing it. Notice the body, the texture, and how bold or smooth it feels.
Finally, pay attention to the finish. Some bourbons disappear quickly. Others leave behind warmth, spice, sweetness, or lingering depth that stays with you.
For an even better tasting experience, add a few drops of water and try it again. You may notice the aroma opens up and different flavors come forward.
The more intentionally you taste, the more you discover.
Save this for your next bourbon pour and tell us what flavor note you usually notice first.
