Days are getting shorter, but there's still plenty of green pastures to roam.
It's been a busy week at the farm, making hay, processing chickens, feeding, stocking, packaging, and keeping all the livestock happy. We picked up our last batch of cornish cross chickens for the year. We will soon start drilling fall cover crops and harvesting feed.
We're preparing to host a Regenerative Ag field day next Tuesday at our farm, find the info here (https://www.clintoncoswcd.org/)
As the seasons change we still stand committed to regenerative agriculture and local foods. We believe this is our contribution to keeping our community thriving and our environment healthly.

Just another day on the farm, we started early processing 120 chickens, then did morning feeding, hauled pigs to butcher, packaged some eggs, hauled some bales, and back to evening feeding and chores.

‘Getting to know us series’: Pasture Raised Chicken
Aka: meat birds, broiler chickens, Cornish cross.
We started our first batch of 50 Cornish cross chickens in our backyard over 14 years ago, processed them with family and friends and decided we could never eat chicken from the store again. Now we raise about 3000/yr. We get our chicks when they are less than 1 day old, they spend about 3 years in the brooder and then graduate to our Mobile Range Coops in the fields, where they move daily to fresh grass and forages. They are never given vaccines, antibiotics, or hormones. We grow their non gmo feeds, consisting of corn, roasted soybeans, and barley with added minerals and vitamins.
We now process 100% of our poultry on site. We load them the night before and process early in the morning. They are air chilled for at least 24hrs, then packaged and labeled for sale. We process at our farm under the poultry exemption license, so we are not required to soak them in bleach water.
Because these are pasture raised, we only raise them in the warmer months, as Cornish cross would not do well in the winter outside.
