We’re starting a ‘get to know us’ series:
I’ll start with me, Jill: guess I’m the full time farmer, 👩‍🌾 I’ve always had a passion for growing our own food and wanting my kids to learn the process. I was a stay at home mom, supporting Chad’s business, raising our 4 kiddos, and running our homestead. After COVID I added homeschooling to my list, and as our farm has grown, I now manage daily operations and paperwork. Some call me the crazy chicken 🐓 lady because the poultry are my specialty 😜. But after starting with a few hens for eggs and a few broiler chickens for our family, we won’t go back to grocery store eggs 🥚 and meat🍗. It’s been quite the blessing to raise our kids on our farm and watch them grow with us. I’m forever grateful to have this life, it’s sometimes crazy busy, but we do our best to balance some down time, but one thing is for sure with having a farm: life never stops, so take in the blessings around you. 🌎🌱🌻

Bale grazing has paid off, this patch was bale grazed just over 3 years ago to build soil and start pasture growth to be able to graze livestock. We placed round hay bales closely together and let the cattle do the work, they ate some, they trampled some, and left lots of biomass to build and regenerate the soil. After some time and adaptive grazing practices we have transformed this into a buffet of greens for our livestock. We save this pasture for summertime grazing. It gives the plants a real chance to express themselves. Bees are everywhere in this pasture.

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend 🇺🇸 remembering our military and spending time with family and friends. We enjoyed an extra family day around the farm with a balance of farm chores and family time.
Pastures have been lush and full with lots of greens for all the livestock. The piglets are growing fast and will soon be transitioned to a bigger pen and the poultry are finding lots of bugs while foraging the pastures. We’ve been checking pastures and crops frequently, this time of year nature is bursting out the seems, as plants, insects, and animals activity increases. If weather allows, we’ll be looking to harvest barley 🌾 soon.

The rain 🌧️ has slowed us down a bit, but that’s ok, nature allows for some rest and rejuvenation.

Wanna know how we keep our soil from wind and rain erosion?!? Cover crops and no-till 🌎 🌱 🪱. We no till corn 🌽 into a standing cover crop mix, then we’ll terminate the covers and let the corn grow. This corn will be ground later for our feed mixes. Healthy soils - healthy plants - healthy livestock. We take a systems approach and believe every step matters in producing nutrient rich proteins.

Farm happenings:
The weathers been great!!! Wednesday we processed chickens, then settled in new broiler chicks, we got 40 acres of soybeans drilled into a cover crop mix of mostly rye, and 20 acres of corn 🌽 planted.
We are fully stocked with chicken cuts. It’s been a smooth start to the busy season. Pastures have been lush with lots of greens to graze.
