My small herd got appraised a couple of days ago, and it was a great experience!
The appraiser was so kind and knowledgeable and was amazing at explaining everything he was evaluating. This was my first ever linear appraisal, so it was a blessing to have an appraiser so willing to help me learn.
I also want to thank Covenant Farms for hosting! It was a great time, and I felt so welcome🫶🏼
But, without further ado, the scores…
Does:
🍬Groovy Goats JJ Taffy GEEV87🍬
(5yr 4F)
The appraiser liked her udder, and mentioned that it’s a very nice shape, with her scoring a 3 in rear udder side view. Taffy needs more width to improve her rear udder arch and allow her udder to be placed higher. He said that if it was any higher she’d be waddling around, but she walks around her very capacious udder smoothly with the sacrifice of a 32 in rear udder height. Also, she could benefit from better teat placement and larger teats. She scored well in depth of body and dairyness. Things to improve on Taffy are her shoulders, rear leg angulation, and rump.
💜Groovy Goats PE Nellie GVEV87 - OH at 23”💜
(5yr 4F)
Nellie scored a 38 in rump width and 34 in rear udder arch, and although she is a bigger girl, it’s still impressive! She’s my deepest goat and second in strength only one number behind Arlo, who’s a literal man goat😅 Basically, Nellie needs to be more feminine and dairy and an inch or two shorter, which was no surprise to me. She also needs more rear leg angulation, which I’m seeing out of her daughter, Laura.
🧇Two To Tango JN Stroopwafel GGAG82🧇
(Yearling FF)
The appraiser said that Waffle has “a pretty udder”, and I completely agree! Her udder is so cute and definitely squeal worthy, and I am so happy with her being my first ever retained doe! Waffle really needs some maturity to improve her score, which will come with age since she’s still just a baby. She’s wider than Taffy, has the best test placement out of my does, has much longer teats than Taffy, and is tied with Nellie for best rear udder height. With Taffy being Waffle’s dam, she is certainly showing improvements while having a lot of the same strengths. I would love to see more rear leg angulation and even more width, and I think I know just the buck for the job. But overall, I’m excited to watch Waffle continue to mature🤩
Bucks:
♠️Bellafire RM Ante Up VEE89 - OH at 24”♠️
(5yr)
Arlo did fantastic! He’s such a balanced buck scoring well in strength and dairyness. He scored a 31 in rump angle and 42 in rump width. He’s a very powerful buck, but he doesn’t sacrifice dairy strength, as seen in his dam (VEEE92) and sire’s dam (E92).
🔥Oregon Trail Alder And Ash GVV84 - OH at 24”🔥
(Yearling)
Yes, I know, Traeger is a big boy for a yearling, but the appraiser said he’s very well balanced for a Nigerian dwarf, which in his case, sacrifices his ability to conform to breed height standards. But he also scored a 43 in rump width, a 27 in rear leg side view, and he’s strong yet dairy and refined, so all is forgiven, right?😅
Such an amazing first appraisal🤩
I’ll also be reintroducing Arlo and introducing Traeger very soon, so stay tuned! Their pedigrees are exciting.
