Week 19 of A Year in Flowers

Something changed this week.

The first dahlia of the season opened — a soft peach, almost glowing against the deep burgundy smoke bush that frames this whole arrangement. That dark foliage changes everything. It makes the soft pinks of the snapdragon and yarrow feel luminous, and the peony look like it belongs in a painting.

This is what summer on the farm starts to feel like.

Week 17 of A Year in Flowers

Peony season is here, and everything else on the farm seems to know it.

This week’s bouquet is built around big, blowsy peonies in the most saturated pink — the kind that make you want to bury your face in them. Snapdragon reaches upward, ranunculus layers in beside the peony, and Pimpinella rosea floats through like a pink cloud. Apple mint adds a soft, herbal note that you almost have to touch to believe.

This is early summer at its most generous.

Week 16 of A Year in Flowers

This is the bouquet that says summer is almost here.

Lupine reaching upward, a calla lily opening wide, sweet william clustered in deep magenta and soft pink, and a garden rose so pale it’s nearly blush white. Each of these has its own moment in the season, and right now they’re all showing up at once.

This is the part of the year the farm works toward all winter. Worth every bit of it.
