I’ve been seeing lots of conspiracy theories going around about TSC feed in the dumor and in producers pride brands because they are owned by Purina. I have not looked into it myself, but many of said that Purina is owned by Land O Lakes, and Land O Lakes owns the largest egg distributor in the US. The theory is the feed you’re buying from tractor supply doesn’t have the right nutrients because they want you to have to buy eggs that come from their distributor. No, it’s pause for a minute if that were true, it doesn’t even make sense that it would be true for the fact of they are still getting money out of your pocket if you’re buying the eggs or buying the feed. I myself have been using in rotation, depending on what I can get hold of Dumor, producers, pride and manna pro.. I have had eggs I just gave away 4 dozen I have a tote full I have eggs in my fridges and now on my counter. Did I have a couple months without eggs?? Yes of course I did because of winter because of having less sunlight because of cold weather anything and everything possible that could stress a chicken can stop them from laying is a predatory bird flies over it can stress them out they can stop playing if a cat walks by their yard they could stop playing if they go a day without water they could stop playing There’s many factors into why peoples chickens are not laying it’s not just solely based on the feed do I supplement other things into the feed sometimes yes, of course, adding cat food is a great protein source and the chickens. Love it. With my over abundance and eggs and the apparent need for chickens I will be setting up the incubator soon and hatching out chicklets, they will be available for purchase for anyone local I do not ship.

PSA:
If your chickens have lice or mites, DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT use frontline or any other flea and tick Med on your birds!

1.) they are not the same bugs it prob won’t even work.
2.) it has not been evaluated for use in poultry
3.) what happens when you consume the eggs that now have the meds in them?
4.) risk killing your birds.

1.)If you have mites/ lice wash your chickens in Dawn dish soap! This will pull a bunch off. When the dry and fluff back up use
2.) Ivermectin pour on 6 drops from the back of the head to the preen gland.
Egg withdrawal for 10 days. Any eggs they lay feed back to them scrambled! Feed extra protein feed as well they will most like be anemic and Need it.

But for the love of the gods DO NOT use meds not intended for you in poultry

Chicken fact:

Red chickens, they go by many many names and people like to argue that they are all different. The reality is no matter the name : New Hampshire Red, golden comet, cinnamon queen, ISA brown, and a few others, are all hybrids from Rhode Island Red. When you are roped into buying one of each you are essentially buying all the same breed. Oh but why a is this one lighter then that one? Well they use Rhode Island Red but they mix it with Rhode Island white. And well the way generics works they will not all look exactly the same. Just the same as people who have multiple children sometimes the look nothing alike. Different features get brought to the surface and depending on what hatcheries like they will select new breeders from there.

Chicken facts.

Chickens do not lay eggs 365 days a year. However some have been bream to yield an increased production rate. What this means is some production breeds CAN lay up to 350 eggs per year but the actual likelihood of that they just won’t.

Many things contribute factors to how they lay. Things to be mindful of when asking “what aren’t they laying” : are your birds stressed in any way? Have you moved them? Are they being stalked by a predator? Do they have mites or lice? Worms? Ear parasites? Upper respiratory infection? Do they have corrid? How’s the lighting they are exposed to? Are they getting a minimum of 14+ hours of “day light”? Are they molting? Are they too hot? Are they too cold? Did you switch feed? Does your feed contain all the the needed vitamins and minerals? Attached is a chart showing potential amount of eggs to be laid. Doesn’t mean they will lay this many.

So when asking why are your chickens not laying. Stop and try and answer these questions too. 🙂 also, SOME may start laying as early as 16 week but in general most won’t start laying til 24-26 weeks and if you are somewhere , where your daylight is cut down and it’s cold, odds are you won’t see a first egg until spring! This IS normal. But this is also why we will start hatching out chicks in December- April. Have those early batches hat hat will start laying sooner rather then later.

Medicated or Unmedicated chick feed?

Some will only used medicated feed personally we have bought what’s on hand we won’t shop around for one or the other. To be honest most often we get unmediated chick feeds. People buy medicated chick feed for the first 16 weeks because it’s supossed to help prevent Coccicidiosis in chicks. In chicks Cocci and be fatal if not treated. I’ve given regular feed and have 0 cocci incidences. Maybe we’ve just got lucky all these years. The chick feed we use happens to have immune boosting herbs in it and let me tell you man oh man does it smell like a box of stuffing! This is a total preference thing.
