Spicy garlic dill pickles and Xtra spicy garlic dill pickles available at West Plains Farmers & Artisans Market today!

The spicy ones are made with jalapeños. I would call them “Missouri spicy,” Barbeque with the family spicy, summer is just beginning spicy.

The Xtra spicy are made with serrano peppers. I would call them “New Mexico spicy,” Barbeque with your best buddies spicy, get the blood pumping after a day at the beach spicy.

You keep eating them, we’ll keep making them for you!

This season’s first batch of rose petal jam is headed to West Plains Farmers & Artisans Market today!

Not only is it a lovely, delicious gift to yourself to slow down for a moment and smell the roses, but it makes a fantastic Mother’s Day gift for your mom, wife, girlfriend, or- did I already mention?- yourself.

As someone who loves flowers in all their forms, eating them has got to be my favorite.

Come check out why this is one of our most popular products at Sullana Farm. I’ve been eagerly waiting all winter to make this again, with love, as always.

We’ve been feeling spicy! Garlic pickles, pickled jalapeños, and pickle medleys headed to the West Plains Farmers & Artisans Market on Monday!

The pickle medleys are all just a little different, featuring carrots, onion, garlic, radishes, celery, cherry tomatoes and more. These are perfect for dressing up salads and burgers.

(And if you’re not a fan of celery, you’d be surprised how much pickling takes the celery taste right out of it and leaves a crisp and crunchy fun flavor!)

And, starting next week all our proceeds for the next month are going to a personal fundraiser for my family in Ukraine to help take some of the pressure off from the ongoing war.

So, stop in the shop next week and try some fun new flavors or stock up on the same pickles you’ve come to love and expect from us!

Redbud jelly to brighten up any cloudy day!

A limited quantity will be available at West Plains Farmers & Artisans Market and is on its way there now. Find it next to the dandelion jelly, strawberry rose jam, and carrot citrus marmalade.

The flowers of the eastern redbud produce a crisp, lovely jelly that tastes like candy. It is beloved all over for good reason but alas, has a very short blooming season. We always forage with pollinators in mind, careful to leave as much as possible for the ants and bees, especially this early in the season when flowers are limited.

Enjoy and happy spring!

It’s been a long time coming, but we officially have no more birds. For the first time since shortly after starting this farming venture we no longer have turkeys, geese, guineas, ducks, chickens, or rabbits. It’s so quiet now. It’s amazing how much the noise of raising small livestock becomes the norm, and it’s amazing how sad it can be to have a quiet property.

It’s been a long time coming and it’ll be an adjustment. Ever since having a baby, raising animals and having to be home all the time to make sure they make it into the barn safe at night, spending Saturdays going to the feed store, Patric having to feed and water them every morning before work… it all became to much.

We know that come spring we can always change our minds and fill up the incubator and start all over, train new birds again, but for now it feels like the end of an era because it was such a part of our everyday existence. How strange to consider chickens and geese family.

But for now- no more worrying about their safety. No more time and energy this winter hauling hot water to their pools to unfreeze their drinking water. No more watching them eat the porch if we turn our backs for too long.

We’ll miss the birds, but it was time. And I can’t wait to see what this new space brings into our lives here in the next chapter of our farm. ✨ 🙏

It was a very sad day on Sullana Farmstead yesterday. I had just gotten Mila up from her first nap and the dogs were whining to be let out. When I let them out I saw a big dog galloping around the bird run and a pile of feathers on the ground. I ran outside to find dead birds everywhere.

The dog just killed them for sport. A pile of rooster tail feather from Rex, our alpha rooster. Dead ducks everywhere. A dead Guinea. A destroyed rabbit hutch that the dog climbed on to get to Patric’s favorite chicken, Pidgey. And the saddest loss of all- our breeding pair of geese. I loved those geese so much.

I know some people find geese terrifying. But, I think they’re elegant and graceful. They are wonderful groundskeepers and protectors of their flock. The ducks followed them around everywhere. They loved hanging out by the back door waiting for us to come out so they could yell at us. They kept the order in the barnyard and I know they died defending the other birds.

I hatched the geese myself two years ago. At the time 7 hatched and only 1 was female, which was just our luck. They spent the winter in our kitchen and took baths in our bathtub until the spring when they got all the grass as far as their little eyes could see. We had a hard time finding females for the males so they existed as a group for over a year. Eventually they all sexually matured and it was a lot for the female. She laid eggs, I hatched more. Eventually we sold the extra males and were left with the goose and the gander that she showed the most attachment to. They were inseparable. He was so sweet. I’d like to think they were in love, soul mates in the bird world. They would have lived another 35+ years if it weren’t for that dog that was allowed to run wild.

Patric came home and took care of what needed to be done, gathering all the dead birds and starting a fire. There was no way he could have dug a big enough hole. But, there remains a big hole in our hearts. It was a sad day. And it remains very quiet today.
