*Some slightly graphic pictures*
One of our goat kids apparently has an abnormal hypersensitivity to pain, which we discovered last week during a routine disbudding done by our vet with nerve blockers and pain medication. Most goats are perfectly fine before, during, and after this procedure.
Not this little one. She strained her quadriceps so badly during the procedure that she ended up with something called rhabdomyolosis, or โtying upโ, commonly seen in horses. Basically it causes muscle breakdown, and high amounts of muscle protein are released into the bloodstream causing kidney damage.
She was urinating blood, refusing to take her bottles, dehydrated and in pain.
When one round of fluids, antibiotics, and pain meds didnโt do the trick, and we were going on day 3 of her not eating, our vets decided to try something new.
They inserted an IV catheter into her neck, and sewed it into place to prevent her from dislodging it. Which allowed Chris and I to give her IV fluids at home every 4 hours around the clock. And because her kidneys were being flushed out with fluids, we were able to give her a better pain medication without risking further damage.
Three days later, the catheter is out and she is off of all meds. She is bright, playful, and finishing her regular bottles, plus some!
My hopes were not high for her. But so far it looks like sheโs making a full recovery!
A HUGE thank you to Green Valley Veterinary Services LLC for going above and beyond, and thinking outside the box to save her! You are the best there is!
