April 18, 2009: the grand opening of the Union Street Bridge to pedestrian and bike traffic. The opening of this bridge remains by far the most exciting and consequential development for me since I've lived in Salem. I snapped this picture at the opening ceremony. Also pictured is my inaugural ride with my roommates (possibly prior to April 18).

Our current feature varietal is a "peaberry" coffee from Mukarimu farm in Kenya.

Peaberry beans occur when only one coffee bean develops inside of the coffee cherry instead of the standard two beans per cherry. Normally, the two beans flatten against each other, creating a round end and a flat end. Peaberry beans are rounder and smaller than normal beans.

These Kenya peaberries have a rich, sweet, bold flavor. We will be roasting them for the next couple 2-3 weeks. Buy direct through our website (www.steelbridgecoffee.com) or at Manna Bakery in downtown Salem.

When I read this week about Salem's oldest known tree (an Oregon White Oak) slated for removal, I realized that it's right on one of my coffee delivery routes. I took a moment to admire it while I still have the chance. It's estimated to be from the 1600s.

I built this table from Zena Forest Products white oak to elegantly hold all my home coffee equipment.

Also note the wood floor, which is Zena's innovative "Edgegrain" floor, utilizing the parts of the log that often get discarded when making traditional hardwood floors. This is the same type of floor that was used in the Portland airport renovation. We love it!

There was a gorgeous rainbow over the river as biked home after my last coffee deliveries of the week. LOL, hope you enjoy this view of the picturesque Marion Street bridge with the steel bridge in the background. We will be closed for the week of Christmas. I hope that everyone has plenty of good coffee stocked up to enjoy the holiday!

Our current featured varietal is from the Murkarimu region of Kenya. Imported by Jamii Coffee (owned by a local Kenyan-Oregonian), this coffee features notes of berries, vanilla, and chocolate.
