We’ve been living under a deep freeze in Upstate NY for the last month. Winter care for livestock is always a challenge….One that is only exacerbated when the temperatures stay well below freezing for extended periods of time.

Simple tasks like keeping water accessible for the becomes a game of breaking ice, draining hoses, and thawing buckets. The mudroom becomes a warming room for chickens that are struggling with the cold, and your winter clothes stay draped across a chair back, ready for the tedious task of layering up every time you leave the house.

Hay ends up everywhere, on every piece of clothes that ventures to the barn, and a shovel lives by the door to make passage to the barns and coops remotely possible.

The goal most days is to simply keep everyone happy and safe. Fed, watered, and as warm as possible in arctic temperatures is the task.

The last few days we have finally seen the temperature break the freezing mark for the first time in nearly a month. The difference in just a few degrees is palpable. Soon it will be consistently above freezing, and that’s when the catch up begins.

This is just a selection of the ewes that we have available as part of our flock reduction. Information for each sheep is in the caption of their respective photo.

While we would prefer to disperse the flock in groups (or as one larger group) to keep things simple, we are open to individual sales as well.

With the decision to hold a significant flock reduction comes a shift in focus. This shift will lean towards a much smaller fiber flock, comprised of a group of our very favorite ewes who all exemplify the friendly, docile, and easy going nature of the Finnsheep breed.

Our flock will provide an array of natural colored fleeces that we will hand process, in small batches, into a variety of hand crafted wool wares.

While we will certainly miss the excitement of lambing season, and the potential that each sheep holds, we will continue to champion this amazing breed through their fiber, and through educational opportunities.

We are in the process of finalizing photos, and an updated availability list of the sheep.

We have made the decision to disperse a portion of our flock while we shift our focus from breeding Finnsheep, to keeping a smaller fiber flock.

This will allow us to work more hands on with the fleeces that our sheep produce, turning each one into an original handcrafted piece, and give us more time to work on much needed farm projects.

Having bred Registered Finnsheep since 2014, we are deeply committed to the breed, and are looking forward to really showcasing their talents as fiber producers going forward.

Keep an eye out for updates on available sheep. We will be offering a selection of unregistered lambs, as well as some registered ewes.

Don’t mind me….I’m just over here in my stressed out farm girl era, trying to keep two tiny humans alive while tending to the needs of all of the animals, all while the summer heat is trying to take me out.

We don’t talk about the supporting characters here on the farm nearly enough, so I thought some introductions were in order.

Fred is our farm cat extraordinaire, known for patrolling the barns and fields, but also being a total and complete couch potato. Our farm cats pull double duty as family pets, and as an integral part of our farms pest control team.

While our old girl, Muffin, is officially retired to the house at nearly 20 years old, Fred has taken up the slack. He tries to keep our “kitten” (already a year old) on task, but that’s generally futile.

If you notice, Fred has a tipped left year, indicating that he was once part of a TNR (Trap/Neuter/Release) program. While he was trapped, and brought into the vet clinic with other feral cats to be fixed, it was clear from the get-go that he was definitely not feral….evident by his belly pressed up against the cage door begging for rubs, the constant conversing with anyone who would listen, and the loudest purr ever.

Instead of being returned with the other feral cats, Fred came home with me, and has been a part of the family ever since.

Thankfully, he has finally stopped climbing up trees he can’t extricate himself from, a habit that landed him in hot water on multiple occasions as a young cat. It would be an epic adventure trying to get him down from our towering pine trees, should he decide to start those shenanigans again.

Occasionally even I’m surprised by something on the farm….which rarely happens anymore. If you’ve had animals long enough, you’ve seen a lot of strange things.
