Every time I put a fresh flock of ducklings or chicks out on pasture for the first time, I can’t help but smile.

This flock is nearly 300 future laying hens, and if all goes according to plan, they’ll begin laying in January.

Watching them step out into the open air, feel the grass under their feet, peck at everything in sight, and explore their new world never gets old. Within a few minutes, they’re running around like they’ve been waiting their whole lives for this moment.

For now, their job is simply to grow, explore, and enjoy the pasture. Come January, these girls will have a much more important job to do.

Change is in the air at Lord-Cranmer Farm… and the new chicken mansion is on the rise!

This hoop house will be the winter home for our new baby chicks, giving them plenty of protected space to grow through the colder months. Come April, the current flock will head out to pasture, and the chicken mansion will take on its next job as the brooder for the next batch of chicks.

And, of course, Charlie the foster dog had to come inspect the construction and make sure everything was up to code.

2,100 tiny new voices on the farm.

After months of planning, budgeting, building, and more than a little worrying, 2,100 baby chicks have officially arrived at Lord-Cranmer Farm.

Right now, their entire world is warmth, fresh bedding, clean water, good feed, and the constant sound of thousands of little chirps coming from the brooder.

These chicks are the beginning of a major next chapter for the farm. Over the coming months, they’ll grow into our new laying flock and help us take a big step toward producing more pasture-raised eggs, creating steadier year-round farm income, and building the kind of farm I’ve been working toward from the beginning.

For now, though, the job is pretty simple: keep 2,100 little birds warm, eating, drinking, healthy, and growing.

MARKET UPDATE — SALEM SATURDAY CANCELED

We woke up this morning to discover that the water main in our shop burst overnight, leaving the shop flooded. Unfortunately, we need to cancel our attendance at the Salem Saturday Market today while we deal with the damage and get things cleaned up.

If you were planning to shop with us today, you can still place an order online for:

• Monday pickup/delivery in Yamhill County
• Tuesday pickup/delivery in Salem

The good news: we are fully restocked on all of our pasture-raised chicken products, including whole chickens and cuts.

We’re sorry to miss our Salem neighbors today, and we greatly appreciate your understanding and support while we get the farm shop back in order.

🌿 Farm Cleanup & Ice Cream Social 🍦🫐

Join us for an afternoon of community, fresh air, and a little hard work followed by a well-earned treat.
🧹 Farm Cleanup: 2:00–4:00 PM
Help us tidy up the farm, pull a few weeds, spruce up the grounds, and prepare for the busy blueberry season ahead. Whether you can stay for 30 minutes or the full two hours, every helping hand makes a difference.
🍦 Ice Cream Social: 4:00–6:00 PM
After the work is done, we’ll gather for ice cream, good conversation, and time with neighbors and friends.
🫐 Blueberry Picking
As a thank you for helping out, everyone who joins the cleanup is invited to head into the blueberry field and leave with as many blueberries as they can pick.
Bring work gloves, comfortable clothes, and a smile. We’d love to spend the afternoon with you and celebrate another season on the farm.
