Mexican Food lovers! ❤️ 🇲🇽🌯🫔🌮 Trying a local spot in Salisbury.

Loteria
📍 113 W Innes St, Salisbury, NC 28144

Family restaurant from Guanajuato, Mexico 🇲🇽

The name “Lotería” comes from a traditional Mexican card game that dates back to the 1700s. It’s similar to bingo, but instead of numbers, it uses illustrated cards like El Gallo (the rooster), La Sirena (the mermaid), and El Corazón (the heart). The game became a cultural staple in Mexican households and celebrations.

So the name isn’t random it’s rooted in tradition.

Food was fresh.
Seasoning was balanced.
Portions were solid.
Atmosphere was welcoming.

If you’re in Salisbury and looking for Mexican food, this could be a spot to try.

Overall rating: _9_/10.

Support local.

Did you know your favorite snack has roots in Black history?

In 1853, chef George Crum created what we now know as the potato chip in Saratoga Springs, New York.

What started as a response to a customer complaint became a global, billion-dollar industry.

But here’s the part we don’t talk about enough:

He never patented it.
He never received long-term financial recognition.
And his story is often reduced to a “happy accident.”

It wasn’t an accident.
It was skill. Technique. Precision.

Black culinary innovation has shaped what the world consumes — often without credit.

This Black History Month, remember his name.

George Crum.

Ingredients:

• 3 russet potatoes
• Vegetable oil (for frying)
• Salt
• Optional: smoked paprika, garlic powder, black pepper

Instructions:
1. Wash and thinly slice the potatoes (use a mandoline if you have one — paper thin is key).
2. Soak slices in cold water for 30 minutes (removes excess starch).
3. Drain and pat completely dry.
4. Heat oil to 350°F.
5. Fry in small batches for 2–3 minutes until golden and crisp.
6. Remove and salt immediately while hot.
7. Let cool and crisp fully on paper towels.

Pro Tip:
Don’t overcrowd the oil. That’s how you get soggy chips.

If you want to elevate it for Recipes of Culture, you could add:

• Brown sugar + cayenne for a sweet heat version
• Creole seasoning for Southern flair
• Sea salt + cracked pepper for upscale vibe

MONDAY IN MY KITCHEN
Bourbon Steak • Garlic Broccoli • Roasted Sweet Potatoes

Slow seared. Glazed. Intentional.

Monday doesn’t have to feel rushed.
Sometimes it looks like bourbon sauce simmering low
and sweet potatoes caramelizing in the oven 🤎

Soft life starts in the kitchen.

🥩 Bourbon Steak (Skillet Style)

Ingredients:
• 2 ribeye or NY strip steaks
• Salt & black pepper
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 2 tbsp butter
• 3 cloves garlic (smashed)

Bourbon Glaze:
• ¼ cup bourbon
• 2 tbsp brown sugar
• 1 tbsp soy sauce
• 1 tsp Dijon mustard
• ½ tsp smoked paprika
• 1 tsp minced garlic

Instructions:
1. Pat steaks dry and season generously with salt + pepper.
2. Heat skillet on medium-high until HOT. Add olive oil.
3. Sear steaks 3–4 minutes per side.
4. Add butter + smashed garlic. Spoon butter over steak (this is the magic part).
5. Remove steaks and let rest.

For the glaze:
In the same pan, lower heat.
Add bourbon (careful — it may flame slightly).
Let it cook down 1–2 minutes.
Whisk in brown sugar, soy sauce, mustard, paprika, garlic.
Simmer until thick and glossy.

Pour over steak. Let it drip down the sides like luxury.

🥦 Garlic Broccoli: roast at 400° for 15 minutes
🍠 Sweet Potatoes: cube + roast with olive oil + cinnamon + paprika 25–30 minutes
