A Hard Day at the Office for Lincoln Cole

Being a Barger Farm employee isn't all naps and treats, no matter what Lincoln Cole wants you to believe!

Today has been especially rough. Just look at him—completely worn out from:
Supervising the truck driver
Monitoring road conditions from the passenger seat
Inspecting every snack that entered the cab
Providing emotional support during long hauls
Keeping watch for suspicious squirrels and deer
Testing the comfort level of every blanket in the truck
Taking multiple mandatory safety naps

After hours of hard work and dedication, Lincoln has officially clocked out for a much-needed break. We don't know how he does it day after day, but someone has to keep Barger Farm running smoothly!

Let's give our hardest-working employee a round of applause and a few belly rubs.

Does your farm dog ride along on the job? Share a picture in the comments—we'd love to see your four-legged farm helpers!

10 Days of Farming with Barger Farm – Day 1

It's silage season at Barger Farm!

In this photo, freshly cut forage is being chopped and loaded for storage. Silage is one of the most important feeds for livestock because it helps provide consistent nutrition throughout the year, especially during the winter months when fresh pasture isn't available.

Farmer Fact:
Silage is made by harvesting forage crops at the right moisture level and storing them in an oxygen-free environment. This fermentation process helps preserve nutrients and creates high-quality feed for livestock.

Farm Tip:
Timing is everything when making silage. Harvesting at the correct maturity and moisture level can significantly improve feed quality and animal performance.

Did You Know?
A single rain event can affect forage quality and harvest schedules, which is why farmers spend a lot of time watching the weather during harvest season.

Every load harvested today helps feed livestock tomorrow. That's why silage season is one of the busiest and most important times of the year on the farm.

What do you think is the biggest challenge farmers face during harvest season?

Drying White Horehound for Future Use

Today we’re drying white horehound from the farm! This hardy herb has been valued for generations and is a wonderful addition to any home herb collection. After harvesting, the stems are hung in a dry, well-ventilated area until the leaves become crisp and ready for storage.

White horehound is traditionally known for:

Supporting respiratory health

Being commonly used in herbal teas and old-fashioned horehound candies

Helping soothe occasional throat irritation

Providing a source of beneficial plant compounds and antioxidants

There’s something about preserving herbs straight from the garden. Taking the time to harvest, dry, and store them connects us to the simple traditions that have been passed down through the years.

What herbs are you drying this season?

There’s something special about sitting on the front porch with a hot cup of coffee, listening to the chickens scratch and chatter as the sun comes up over the farm. No rush, no noise—just fresh air, simple blessings, and gratitude for another day.

These quiet moments remind us that some of life’s greatest treasures aren’t things at all. They’re the peaceful mornings, the sounds of nature, and the joy of farm life.

Wishing everyone a blessed Sunday!
