Not the season for hot cocoa?
Tis, actually.
Smart brands like ProSupps know that in order to have a product in stores by the start of a season, they need to start formulating 6-8 months in advance. And even then, the timeline can be tight. Since changing the base's cocoa ratio can cause stability issues and months of extra shelf life testing, our formulators looked for creative and delicious solutions to increasing richness in this hot cocoa. Can complex issues like this be solved in one iteration? Probably not.
But when you bring your R&D to Sensapure, they can be solved in one day.

These days, consumers don't want protein.
They simply expect it.
But 'simple' has nothing to do with it.

Protein is a complicated science. Dodging bitterness, chalkiness, and precipitation is only the beginning; because when you start playing with different protein sources vs different maskers/sweeteners/flavors, you've just started playing 3D chess.

Good thing Sensapure has our own self-proclaimed "Protein Barista."

As Sensapure's Powdered Applications Lab Manager, Jason Braithwaite is an expert in all powdered formulations. Especially protein. He's seen it all, from standard proteins like plant, whey, clear, fermented, etc, to revolutionary new proteins from thin air. When it comes to navigating the complexity of masking bitterness, overcoming mouthfeel, or compensating for the changes from heat treatment, Jason isn't just Sensapure's protein barista—he's the protein barista for your next project.

6 fun facts about protein:
- Protein can completely change flavor perception — Many proteins naturally add bitterness, chalkiness, dryness, or “cooked” notes—especially plant proteins.
- Whey and plant proteins behave VERY differently — Whey tends to be smoother and more neutral, while pea, rice, and soy proteins often require heavier flavor masking.
- More protein ≠ better texture — High protein levels can make beverages thick, gritty, or overly viscous surprisingly fast.
- Heat processing changes protein behavior — Pasteurization and UHT can denature proteins, causing separation, sedimentation, or texture changes over shelf life.
- Protein impacts sweetness perception — Some proteins suppress sweetness, meaning formulators often need to rebalance sweetener systems.
- Chocolate is popular partly because it hides protein flaws well — Cocoa naturally masks bitterness and off-notes better than many fruit flavors.

We’re proud to share that Sensapure founder Jeff Reynolds has been named a finalist for the Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2026 Mountain West Award from EY.

https://www.sensapure.com/about/entrepreneur-of-the-year-2026-finalist

Jeff started Sensapure in 2017 with a simple belief: brands in the and space deserved a better partner—one that understood flavor, formulation, manufacturing, and what it actually takes to scale.

Since then, we’ve grown from a small startup into a team across Salt Lake City and Lehi, Utah. Along the way, we’ve helped commercialize thousands of flavors and worked with brands building some incredible products.

Thanks to all of who made this possible!

Bartenders can make an espresso martini in a minute.

But when you need it 1. in a shelf-stable can, 2. craveable & unique, and 3. ready to launch at the 2026 ...
..4 months go by faster than a minute.

January to April wasn't much time, but Sensapure is always up for a challenge. Thanks to Robin Thicke (the Grammy-nominated songwriter famous for his Diamond-certified hit "Blurred Lines"), his determination to launch Mimá, and his frequent in-person visits to Sensapure, we were able to flavor the (and several other future martinis) for Mimá's big launch at The Beverage Forum.

While Sensapure made formulating a canned espresso martini look easy, balancing all the aspects—coffee bitterness, alcohol burn, creaminess, sweetness, texture, shelf life, and flavor stability—took more than 1 or 2 iterations to perfect. That's why Robin's frequent visits to Sensapure made all the difference. By tasting, giving feedback, and seeing improvements in real time, he was able to nail down the flavor in a few days. Cutting out months of shipping samples gave Robin more time to focus on other launch details, like supply chains, packaging, and pilot tests.

That's what allowed Mimá to launch in only 4 months.

👨🏻‍💼 About the Presenter:
Jeff Reynolds is the Founder and CEO of Sensapure Flavors, a Utah-based flavor house built specifically for active lifestyle, sports nutrition, functional beverages, and beverage brands. Sensapure helps scaling brands develop better-tasting products, own their flavor and formulation intellectual property, and grow without being bottlenecked by a single manufacturer or supply chain relationship.
Sensapure was created to solve a problem Jeff saw repeatedly in the nutrition industry: most flavor houses can make great flavors, but few understand how those flavors perform inside aggressive functional formulations. Pre-workouts, protein powders, hydration products, energy systems, RTD beverages, and other active lifestyle products often contain ingredients that are bitter, salty, metallic, earthy, or otherwise difficult to flavor. That disconnect can cost brands time, money, launch momentum, and repeat purchase.
Under Jeff’s leadership, Sensapure combines flavor chemistry, application expertise, sensory evaluation, product development, flavor matching, masking technologies, and in-house production to help brands create outstanding products in weeks, not months. The company began as the flavor applications department for a major nutritional supplement manufacturer before being spun off as a standalone flavor house in 2017.
Today, Sensapure supports leading brands and qualified contract manufacturers with custom liquid, powdered, spray-dried, extract, emulsion, natural, organic-compliant, non-GMO, kosher, halal, and masking flavor systems for hard-to-flavor applications. Sensapure has been named #20 on the Utah Business Fast 50, but Jeff measures success by the brands Sensapure helps grow—companies that move from emerging challengers to category leaders with products they control.

: part 3
This Mother's Day series is all about "Don't Pick an Ingredient: Pick a Moment." But when that moment is exercise and the list of relevant ingredients is well-known (pre-workout, intra-workout, post-workout, electrolytes, protein), then you should just pick an ingredient, right?

Wrong.

'Active lifestyle' as a target demographic is too vague. Busy moms, college kids, focused professionals, even seniors often fit exercise into their day. The perfect ingredient for one active lifestyle demographic is completely disastrous for another.

Knowing when (and why) your consumer exercises is vital to picking the right blend of active ingredients.

For example, pre-workout caffeine is a perfect choice for gym bros who exercise in the morning, but a terrible choice for evening exercisers or low-caffeine consumers. Intra-workout means nothing to casual exercisers, and post-workout protein or electrolytes are now more commonly paired with secondary ingredients. Which ingredients? That depends on your consumer and their needs.

Take this mom. She fits in a morning jog when she can, then jumps to answering work emails and making lunch for her little girl. Does she want a protein shake that could double as lunch? Or does she need hydration + light energy for the afternoon ahead? Or is she focused on GLP-1 recovery?

You know your market—on paper, at least. But have you walked a mile in their shoes? Taking the time to truly understand their needs is what sets the billion-dollar brands apart. If you need a hand, let us know: we've formulated for more demographics than we can list: https://www.sensapure.com/formulation/persona-driven-product-development

: part 2

Sensapure Flavors is celebrating Mother's Day all week by exploring different moments in a mom's life. What drink does she need to get going in the morning? What drink can she enjoy while stuck in traffic? Questions like these are the key to understanding your consumers, and specifically, their habits.

Because if you can make a product that aligns perfectly with your consumers' habits, your will become a daily staple.

A daily necessity.

So, traffic. What does an active-lifestyle mom want while stuck in traffic? What does a focused professional want? Or an active senior? Traffic is a common moment among all demographics, making it the perfect moment to formulate for. Does your consumer want vitamins to start their day right? Or electrolytes + recovery as they drive away from the gym? Or meal replacement during a long commute? Whatever your target demographic wants, delicious flavor is undoubtedly high on their checklist.

If you want your product to become their daily habit, anyway.

Check out 8 other common demographics here! https://www.sensapure.com/formulation/persona-driven-product-development Whoever you're formulating for, Sensapure is here to help you find their moment and design the perfect product for them.
