Green River Ranch Bona Fide Farm on the banks of the beautiful Green River!

Today the Green River Ranch had some pretty special visitors.

Dozens of monarch butterflies stopped in the flower farm, feeding on the last blooms of the season—the flowers we intentionally left standing for exactly this reason.

These monarchs are part of one of nature’s most incredible journeys. The butterflies passing through Western North Carolina right now are different. They’re the “super generation”—living far longer than the monarchs born earlier in the year and capable of flying thousands of miles south to the same forests in Mexico their ancestors left months ago.

They may travel 50–100 miles in a day, stopping along the way to drink nectar and build the energy reserves they’ll need for the journey ahead.

Today, the Green River Ranch was one of those little rest stops.

It’s pretty amazing to think that a few flowers we chose not to cut may help carry these tiny travelers all the way to Mexico.

Today, we're excited to share that the Green River Ranch pavilion is complete!

This is a place to for our guests and the broader community to gather, celebrate, and connect. For us personally a big step in recovery.

Just beyond it, the flower farm is in full bloom. We planted them after the storm with little hope they would grow, now a constant reminder of what’s possible.

Thankful for this community and our guests. We’re just getting started!

Sticking with the wildlife theme here we have a young Osprey photographed on the same float we saw the snapping turtle.

Osprey chicks typically leave the nest at about 7–8 weeks old, but they often stay near their parents for several more weeks while learning to hunt and survive on their own. That is the stage this bird is in as it's parents were nearby. Hard to believe but this bird may migrate hundreds or even thousands of miles south for the winter.

One unexpected silver lining from Hurricane Helene has been the increase in wildlife sightings along the river corridor. With fewer tubers and less recreation traffic on the water over the past year and a half, we've noticed more opportunities to observe animals going about their daily lives, from osprey and eagles to otters and deer.

Osprey are incredible fishermen, catching their own meals by plunging feet-first into the water and grabbing fish with specialized talons. Unfortunately for them, they have a notorious rival: the Bald Eagle. The resident pair of Bald Eagles constantly harass the ospreys in flight until they drop their catch, allowing the eagle to swoop in and steal the meal without doing the fishing itself. It's a behavior known as kleptoparasitism—and bald eagles are some of nature's most successful thieves.

The wild moments like this remind us that the Green River is so much more than a recreation destination, it's home to an incredible community of wildlife.

Fun fact: Osprey populations were nearly wiped out in much of the United States during the DDT era of the 1950s and 60s. Today they're considered one of the great conservation success stories and can be found nesting along rivers, lakes, and coastlines throughout North America.

Met this old timer down by the river today!

The Common Snapping Turtle is one of the Green River's most important, and most misunderstood, residents. These turtles are nature's cleanup crew, helping keep waterways healthy by eating dead fish, insects, plants, and other organic matter.

A few cool facts:
- A snapping turtle can live 30-50+ years in the wild
- This turtle, probably weighing around 20 pounds is probably around 30 years old.
- They have been around for millions of years and have survived floods, droughts, predators, and changing landscapes
- Despite their reputation, they are not dangerous to swimmers and almost always avoid people in the water
- Their powerful bite is mainly a defense mechanism when they are cornered on land

He survived Hurricane Helene's historic floods, hunkered down and rode out conditions that reshaped the entire landscape.
That's one of the things we love about the Green River. Every bend, pool, and eddy is home to wildlife with stories we can only imagine.

Next time you see a snapping turtle, give it some space, appreciate it for the ancient survivor it is, and remember—it's doing its part to keep the river healthy.
