My dad sold the first semen into Southern Africa (was smuggled into SA from then-Rhodesia) in the 1970’s. Pretty amazing that our family has been working on this project for so many years and generations.

🐂 Long before the Beefmaster set foot in South Africa in the 1970s, its story began in the tough landscapes of Texas, USA — during one of the most challenging economic periods in history.

In 1908, innovative cattleman Ed Lasater began using Brahman bulls on his European-type cattle. By blending Bos ta**us with Bos indicus, he laid the foundation for what would become the Beefmaster breed.

After Ed’s passing in 1930, his 20-year-old son, Tom Lasater, took over the struggling family operation during the Great Depression. With limited resources, he made a bold decision: cross the best bulls from one herd with the cows of another — creating a powerful three-way cross (Brahman × Hereford × Shorthorn).

The results? Cattle that outperformed both parent groups — more fertile, more adaptable, and more profitable.

In 1954, the United States Department of Agriculture officially recognised the Beefmaster — making it the first true American three-breed composite to be registered as a breed.

From the harsh conditions of South Texas to the diverse environments of South Africa, the Beefmaster was built on resilience, function, and economic sense.

That legacy still drives Beefmaster SA today. 💪🔥

This week we worked our yearling bulls that will sell this fall. We run them in big, rough country to develop structure and athleticism. We don’t push them nutritionally at this critical development stage, so they can provide many years of heavy service for our customers. The roundup is done by helicopter to insure we find them all. Chute-side, we take yearling weight and scrotal measurement, administer vaccinations and sonogram carcass scans. Donnie Robertson scans around 400 yearlings for us annually. Isa Beefmasters adopted the technology when it first came available in the 1980's and have scanned tens of thousands over the decades. As a selection tool, it has played a critical role in making the L Bar herd the carcass leader in the Beefmaster breed.
