It’s finally Fall! Which we love, but also comes with weather change and sick people, sick people everywhere. 😳

This time of year has us walking around with our pocket sized lysol and a thermos full of bone broth. Nobody wants to catch that nasty cold. In case you do, you can treat your cold symptoms with bone broth.

A bowl of bone broth won’t cure your cold but it will alleviate some of the symptoms. The nutritional benefits will boost your immune system.

For centuries, bone broth has been considered a remedy for colds in many traditional healing practices.

Warming up
Since viruses usually thrive in cold temperatures, drinking a hot beverage like broth or eating chicken soup helps avert seasonal flu.

Stronger immunity
At lower temperatures, our bodies tend to produce fewer antiviral immune signals and leave us more susceptible to infections. That is why bone broth is so helpful. It contains numerous vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that strengthen your immune function.

Cleared airways
Bone broth can bolster the movement of nasal fluids in the upper respiratory tract, which is essential for curing infections like the common cold.

Proper hydration
When you get a cold, you’ll probably hear the advice “drink more liquids.” Staying hydrated is crucial, it helps maintain immune function and detoxify the body. Bone broth is a good source of electrolytes, sodium, magnesium, calcium, potassium, which are famous for hydrating the body, better than water.

Keep your body geared up for what’s come this season. Nobody wants to run to the store or get sick supplies when they’re feeling ill. Fuel up with our bone broth and keep some in your freezer for that unexpected cold or flu.

As a culture, we’re losing to convenience when it comes to food. We’ve progressed in things like technology and medicine, but not with food.

This largely has to do with the time and preparation it takes to create a nourishing meal.

Once upon a time, people prioritized this. The breakfast and dinner table was something that was worked around, not just worked in. Food ingredients were pure and trusted.

Today, meals and ingredients are compromised. Many in which are literally dangerous. You have to dissect ingredient labels to cancer-causing chemical BHA, propylene glycol (found in antifreeze), and GMO corn-, soy-, and dairy-based fillers.

We need to take it back to the kitchen. Back to real ingredients. Back to being able trust.

That’s why Ossum Bone Broth exists. Nothing in the bone broth space could be trusted. Everything was altered, made with fillers, unethical, and just dangerous.

We take it back to the kitchen. We take it back to when food was real and trusted. We refuse be defeated by convenience.

First it was quinoa. Then it was kale. Chia seeds had a moment in the sun, and flax. But the hottest age-old nutritional all-star is bone broth.

The healing properties in bone broth are easily absorabable: calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, and sulfur (just to name a few).

Bone broth also contains chondroitin sulfates and glucosamine, which are usually sold as supplements to reduce inflammation and arthritis.

Bone broth is also rich in Gelatin, which helps seal holes in the intestines that are associated with food allergies and autoimmune conditions.

It's no wonder why this superfood is legendary, and not just a one hit wonder.

🌿As a small, local brand, we're able to engage deeply with our customers and listen to their feedback. We listen to how they use their broth, frequency, what they like, what they don't like.

In doing so, we're able to understand what we're doing right and what we need to adjust. We're thankful to customer feedback, it gives us an opportunity to grow and become better.

Our bone broth is always served to the customer hot, fresh off the kettle. We wanted to create a way to sustain our bone broth, without additives and compromising authenticity.

Freezing was the best option. However, after listening to what our customer base wanted, we were able to get even more micro with it. Our customers wanted a way to unfreeze small portions at a time, as opposed to all at once.

We have now headed in the direction of packaging our bone broth in 8oz. frozen bricks. You'll be able to use it in single servings as you go.

Entrepreneurship has taught us to execute and adjust. And most importantly, to listen and learn.

🌿What does "leaky gut" mean? That your gut is just leaking? Yes and no.

It's a little deeper than that.

It means the mucosal lining in your gut is torn. What does that mean in your body? It means when your body is attempting to digest an indigestible protein that it doesn't digest it in the gut, where it's supposed to. The indigestible protein leaks through the gut and into the bloodstream. The body then goes into a state of inflammation to protect itself from the invader in the bloodstream. Inflammation is the precursor to disease.

🌿Who gets a leaky gut (and why)?

We all have some degree of leaky gut, as this barrier is not completely impenetrable.

Modern life may actually be the main driver of gut inflammation. There is emerging evidence that the standard American diet, which is low in fiber and high in sugar and saturated fats, may initiate this process. Heavy alcohol use and stress also seem to disrupt this balance.

Some of us may have a genetic predisposition and some more sensitive to changes in the digestive system.

The path to a healthier gut requires lifestyle modification. Taking some things out of our diet and adding others.

Fresh, homemade style bone broth has been shown to repair the mucosal lining in the gut for better better digestion and health.

Our bone broth is always fresh and can help you on your path to a healthier gut.

🌿 One of the top benefits of bone broth protein is that it has been shown to aid with leaky gut which helps to strengthen your immune system.

This protein will help to heal and repair which tends to have a holistic effect on the entire body. Our gut plays such an important role to our overall health making it vital to ensure your digestive tract is in good shape.

A cup of homemade bone broth a day can help repair the mucosal lining in your gut and boost your immune system.

How Much Protein Do You Actually Need?

Protein is vital to workout recovery and results, with current research showing that for optimal muscle health, people need about double the amount of protein that experts once thought.

A previous 2015 review published in Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism concluded that most adults need to eat 25 to 35 grams of protein at every meal for optimal muscle health.

Foods with high protein include: Lean meats,
Fish, Eggs, Bone Broth, Dairy, Legumes.

The protein you eat supplies the building blocks that make up your muscles. These building blocks, or amino acids, help repair damaged muscle proteins and form new ones, with the ultimate goal of creating stronger, bigger and fitter muscles.

Bone broth is one of the most bioavailable sources of protein your body can consume, with a whopping 10g of protein per cup.

We like to add it to the other protein sources like meat, fish, eggs when cooking to double our protein intake. It's the perfect thing to consume when your other meals may be low protein.

Whatever you do, make sure you're getting at least 75g of protein a day.

🍋 Because bone broth contains a concentrated amount of compounds like collagen, glucosamine and chondroitin, adding a few servings of bone broth to your diet can have a powerful impact on joint health and inflammation. Ideally, you should aim for around two to four cups of bone broth per day.

While you're at it, squeeze lemon into your cup for extra flavor and benefits.

Supplements vs. Foods:

The supplements vs. food debate has been going on ever since pharmaceutical and food companies realized they could bottle nutrients and sell them.

With an industry value of over $122 billion, it was a successful move. So should they be a part of your life? Or should you focus your attention on what you eat?

We know when something is provided in its natural, whole food form it's more beneficial to your body on multiple levels.

When you eat food, your digestive system and enzymes work to separate different nutrients for different purposes.

Your body takes what it needs and usually throws away the rest through waste. This means taking more than you require of some vitamins and minerals has no added benefit, your body will dispose of the excess.

Some nutrients also help each other out. Vitamin D, for instance, boosts the body’s absorption of calcium.

By eating an orange, which contains calcium and vitamin D, you get to absorb more calcium.

If you took a single supplement of calcium, it wouldn’t get that help.

Vitamins and minerals found in food sources are easier to absorb than those in supplement form.

With the added benefit of the other nutrients found in food, eating healthily gives far greater benefits than opting for supplements and eating poorly.

Consuming authentic, homemade bone broth instead of bone broth supplements, powders, drops, etc. is the same. Bone broth has an amino acid profile that works together with all its other components to give your body the nutrients it needs. Any other short cut method that claims to deliver the same benefits is just that, a shortcut.

When speaking generally, the results are clear concerning supplements vs food. Getting your nutrients from healthy food is the best way to keep your vitamin and mineral levels topped up.

🍖 Beef or Chicken??

Beef broth has more glycine than chicken because it is made up primarily of type I and III collagen. Think of glycine as your gut's personal assistant. Glycine fights inflammation in your gut by laying down new connective tissue.

Chicken bones are predominantly type II collagen, which is great for joints/cartilage. It's also key for the immune system and digestive support, especially for healing and sealing the gut lining.

What type of collagen does your body need?
