California Wild Ales OB

Of course the b**r has to be good ... but it's the people who matter most.

Discover why California Wild Ales is more than great b**r: friendly faces, neighborhood events, and a place to feel at home in Ocean Beach.

Vera is back out for a swim around the neighborhood. 🧜‍♀️💜

After spending a little time tucked away, Ocean Beach’s beloved local mermaid is making the rounds again — and her first stop is California Wild Ales!

Vera has been part of OB folklore for years, carrying on the story of the original mermaid that once watched over Sunset Cliffs. She also carries with her the spirit of Claudia Jack, who helped keep the OB Mermaid tradition alive and turned Vera into a traveling neighborhood icon. We’re honored to give Vera a temporary perch at Wild Ales and to pay a little tribute to Claudia and the community she loved.

Since it’s Wednesday, if you’re heading down for the Ocean Beach Farmers Market, swing by California Wild Ales, grab a b**r, and get your photo with Vera before she swims off to her next OB destination.

Only in Ocean Beach. 💜🌊🍺

After three straight 🥇 People’s Choice Championships at the Ocean Beach Chili Cook-Off… we’ve decided to retire.

Well… sort of. 😄

After taking home People’s Choice Bronze in 2022 (we simply didn’t make enough chili!), we came back with People’s Choice Gold in 2023, Gold plus 2nd Place Judges in 2024, and completed the three-peat with another People’s Choice Gold in 2025.

At this point, Monica DeWitt has officially earned the title of the Michael Jordan of Ocean Beach chili. 🌶🏆

Like MJ, she’s stepping away from the game for a few years… to pursue her dream of playing outfield for the Chicago White Sox. 😂

We’ll still be at the Ocean Beach Chili Cook-Off cheering everyone on, tasting some incredible chili, and enjoying one of our favorite community traditions. The championship is officially up for grabs.

Good luck to all the competitors… and don’t get too comfortable. Monica will be back. 😉
