Morning Moments
Sunday, August twenty-third, twenty twenty-six

This morning I looked east.

The sun was rising, warming the horizon and sending light across the morning sky.

Then I turned and looked west.

There was the marine layer, gray along the horizon, blue sky above it—and something that caught my attention. The light seemed to be fanning upward from the west too, almost as though something on the other side were shining back toward the sunrise.

But there wasn’t another sun over there.

It was the same light.

The rays beginning in the east were traveling across the sky, and perspective made them appear to gather again on the opposite horizon.

One sun.

One light.

Two completely different views depending upon which direction I faced.

And I thought about how often we do that in life.

Sometimes we’re looking toward the light and everything seems open and clear.

Other times we turn in another direction and all we can see is the layer in front of us. We can begin believing the whole sky has changed simply because the part we’re looking at has.

But the whole sky hasn’t necessarily changed.

Sometimes only the direction we’re looking has.

And there was something else in those western rays that I liked even more.

The light I could see over there had traveled from somewhere I wasn’t looking anymore.

The beginning and the effect appeared separate.

They weren’t.

Maybe life is like that sometimes too.

We see an experience here and its consequence somewhere much farther down the road. A conversation. A kindness. A decision. A loss. A person who crossed our path. Something we learned years ago that suddenly makes sense today.

We don’t always see the connection while it’s happening.

Sometimes we have to turn around.

Not everything that looks separate is separate.

And sometimes you have to turn around to see what the light has been doing behind you.

Morning Moments
Saturday, August twenty-second, twenty twenty-six

I heard something the other day that stayed with me:

“If something is eating your garden, you must be doing something right.”

This morning, I found two snails helping themselves to the cabbage.

And looking around the garden, I could see the evidence everywhere. Holes in leaves. A damaged tomato. A pepper that didn’t escape untouched. Plants that have clearly become breakfast, lunch, and probably a midnight snack for something besides me.

At first, the thought seems simple.

Something is eating the garden because there is something here worth eating.

But this morning I realized there might be something deeper in it.

When something begins to grow, it also becomes exposed.

There is more to protect.

More that can be damaged.

More that can be lost.

And maybe that is true of us, too.

Adversity doesn’t necessarily come because we are doing something right. Hardship isn’t proof that we have chosen the correct path.

But neither is adversity proof that we are doing something wrong.

Sometimes we have simply grown enough to have something worth protecting.

And somewhere along the way, while we were growing what could be damaged, we were also growing what could survive it.

Roots became deeper.

Stems became stronger.

We learned when to hold on, when to let go, what needs protecting, and what can simply be allowed to heal.

The cabbage doesn’t stop growing because a snail took a bite.

The sunflower doesn’t question its purpose because something chewed a hole through one of its leaves.

Life continues around the wound.

Maybe that’s the part worth remembering.

We don’t have to see every difficult thing as punishment.

We don’t have to turn it into a sign.

Sometimes adversity is simply part of being alive and having something at stake.

And sometimes we discover that what we need to get through it has been growing quietly inside us all along.

Of course, I still removed the snails.

Growth may teach acceptance.

It doesn’t mean you have to provide the buffet. 😂

MORNING MOMENT — AUGUST TWENTY-FIRST, TWENTY TWENTY-SIX

This morning I found dew gathered along the edges of one of the sunflowers growing beside the street.

Not rain. No storm came through overnight. Just moisture that was already in the air, slowly gathering until there was enough to form a drop.

And I thought about how much of life happens that way.

We tend to notice the big things. The breakthrough. The answer. The opportunity. The moment when everything finally changes.

But maybe some of the things that sustain us don’t arrive that way.

Maybe they collect.

A conversation that helps us through the day.

A stranger who offers a little kindness.

A friend who checks in.

A few dollars when money is tight.

A lesson we didn’t understand the first time.

A small opportunity that doesn’t look like much yet.

One drop probably doesn’t seem important.

But then another gathers beside it.

And another.

Until one morning you look closely and realize something has been collecting all along.

I especially liked that the sunflower didn’t have to chase after any of it. It simply kept growing where it was planted. Through the heat. Through the bugs. Through damaged leaves and changing weather.

And this morning, there was water waiting on its edges.

Maybe that’s worth remembering.

Not everything we need arrives as a downpour.

Sometimes life gives us enough for this moment.

Drop by drop.

And sometimes we don’t realize how much we’ve received until we stop long enough to look.

Morning Moments — August 18 2026

Sometimes acceptance gets mistaken for surrender.

But they are not the same thing.

When I took the sunflowers down, I discovered that the borage had been leaning on them more than I realized. The sunflowers were gone, the support they had quietly provided disappeared, and the borage began to fall.

I could have wished the sunflowers were still there.
I could have been frustrated that the borage could no longer stand the way it had before.

But neither would have changed what was in front of me.

The conditions had changed.

So I put stakes beside the borage, gently lifted it, and gave it something new to lean against.

And it kept growing.

There are moments in life when something changes that we did not choose. A relationship changes. A job ends. Money becomes uncertain. A door closes. A plan we were depending on suddenly isn’t the plan anymore.

Our first instinct can be to fight the reality of it.

This shouldn’t be happening.
This wasn’t supposed to change.
I don’t want this.

Those feelings are real. But eventually there comes another question:

Given that this is where I am now, what can I do from here?

That is where acceptance becomes powerful.

Acceptance doesn’t mean saying something is fair when it isn’t.

It doesn’t mean pretending we aren’t frightened, disappointed, angry, or uncertain.

And it certainly doesn’t mean giving up.

It means we stop spending all of our strength arguing with what has already happened and begin using that strength to work with what is actually in front of us.

The borage couldn’t make the sunflowers come back.

But once I saw what it needed now, I could help it stand again.

Maybe resilience isn’t always standing exactly as we stood before.

Sometimes resilience is recognizing that the conditions have changed, accepting the reality of where we are, finding a different kind of support, and continuing to grow anyway.

The garden keeps reminding me:

Acceptance is not the end of the fight.
Sometimes it is the moment we finally know where to put our strength.
