New Roots Community Farm

New Roots Community Farm The New Roots Community Farm is a 2.3 acre urban farm that provides growing spaces for 85 families in the heart of the City Heights neighborhood.

Many of the participants were farmers in the home country and this is their first opportunity to reconnect with the land in the United States, as well as double their family’s food security and nutrition access. We hold workdays once every month. For more information about New Roots and how you can be involved please contact Priya at 619-641-7510 x.308 or send her an email at [email protected].

Fun educational event at New Roots on Saturday June 29th! In March 2013 five New Roots Growers attended the Just Food Conference in NYC http://www.justfood.org/events/just-food-conference-2013. CSA!!!

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in San Diego is launching a 15-week CSA starting February 14 with produce from the IRC's sustainable agriculture program for refugees at its incubator farm in Pauma Valley (the former Tierra Miguel land). CSA members can choose between a full share and a half share to enjoy chemical-free, locally grown seasonal produce each week while supporting our refugee neighbors in rebuilding productive lives for themselves and their families. (Here's a recent news story about one of the participating refugee farmers: http://dailynightly.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/01/07/16396959-refugees-discover-new-ways-to-plant-roots-in-america?lite.) All the details for the CSA, along with registration links, are here: http://www.rescue.org/us-program/us-san-diego-ca/irc-community-supported-agriculture. As of right now, we have one pick-up point on Thursday afternoons at the IRC office on University Avenue and 54th Street. If ten or more members can identify an additional drop-site for their shares, we'd be more than happy to explore delivering there as well (possibly on Friday mornings).
