The state of California officially recognizes 9/25 as Dolly Parton Day and so 👏 do 👏 I!

I’m diligently working on a special Dolly Parton Menu for this weekend, featuring Dolly cakes and the famous cinnamon bread recipe as served at Dollywood, TN! Other items are TBD as my time, ingredients, and energy see fit.

All will be available at Shelter Island Market on Friday from 2-6 pm, and at the Tower Bar on Sunday 9/27 while supplies last! Come be the person that Dolly would want you to be and support local!

I’ve been asked many times since I started my business if I have vegan options available. For a while, I didn’t because of compound issues:

1) Because Saxana is completely self-funded, I often couldn’t afford non-dairy butters.

2) Even when I could afford non-dairy butters, I studied up on vegan baking and realized that I don’t want to support any of the corporations that produce non-dairy butters. Some of them put their competitors out of business and added extra ingredients to otherwise clean products, others switched up their formulas. I just didn’t like the idea of paying a premium to disenfranchise other creatives like myself and be at the mercy of the corporations’ formulas.

3) I *always* make sub ingredients by hand when I can to provide a more artisanal end product. I proudly craft each of my products with love and passion and would rather extend that ethos to any vegan products I develop rather than grab a tub of EarthBalance just to say I could tick off the “vegan,” box.

So, broke out Miyoko Schinner’s cultured vegan butter recipe, cultured my own cashew milk, made a permanent switch to a certified vegan (bone char-free) sugar, and adapted my signature brown butter cookie base recipe to be completely plant-based. The result is a luxurious Levain-style chocolate chip cookie that is crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside, and every bit as delicious and artisanal as everything that comes out of my oven.

This is just the first step in many more adaptations. I’ve got ideas for additional cookie flavors, bars, and brownie recipes. Feel free to let me know what kind of vegan treats you’d show up for!

BENEFIT SHOW supporting our communities against ICE. Entry is free, with a $10 suggested donation. All donations are recirculated back into the community and go directly to supporting the most vulnerable of our community members.

We will be joining the vendor roster with seasonal cakes, cookies, and sweet treats. Come on out and shop small, support local, and enjoy food, music, and drinks!
