Seeing double?? Debuted our almost life-sized, new FLAT LESLIE (me in red👠) and the IRL LESLIE (me in purple 💁‍♀️) at Monday night’s sold-out KQED Taste & Sip event celebrating 21 seasons of Check Please! Bay Area.

My favorite event of the year brings together the show’s fans, along with more than 50 restaurants featured on the series, and libations from wine to spirits.

We filled the San Francisco design center with so much flavor, flair, and fun. Thank you to all who came and the entire KQED live events team for creating magic.

Lots more photos and videos to come. Stay tuned….🥂 KQED Food

JOIN ME WEDNESDAY JUNE 3rd @ 4 P.M. (EST) FOR A FUN AND FAST CONVERSATION WITH LOUISA ROSE OF AUSTRALIA’S YALUMBA WINERY! Everyone is welcome to hop on Zoom and watch a half hour chat about Viognier — one of my favorite whites!

Winemaker Louisa Rose has been a vocal and longtime champion of Viognier during her 30+ year career at Hill-Smith Family Estates. It’s her favorite variety and a white wine that she believes drinks so much like a red, she often suggests pairing it with a steak. A graduate of the University of Adelaide in Wine Science, Louisa had never even tasted Viognier until she arrived at Yalumba, and points out the variety which is most often associated with the Rhône Valley, was almost extinct at the time in France. Since there was no precedent, she started by treating it like Riesling, which she quickly learned was a mistake, and with experience she found the right methods, most importantly native yeast fermentation, to help this new and thoroughly modern wine come into its own.

It was great to have a photo session last week at KQED studios to get a shot for the new FLAT LESLIE — a full sized, foam-board cutout that will debut at our event of the year, Check, Please! Taste & Sip.

Our ten-year-old FLAT LESLIE was found folded in half and stuck in a closet, so it was time to make a new version. When we first debuted her, everyone joked that nothing about me is FLAT, but the name seemed apropos so we kept it. Now we can call her ‘LADY IN RED’ I think 🤔 💃 (even snuck in a picture of my tattoo… A glass of pink bubbly on my leg 🥂)

Tickets are still available for the event: MONDAY, JUNE 8th AT 7PM AT THE SAN FRANCISCO DESIGN CENTER. More than 50 eateries and a dozen drinks purveyors will be serving tasty bites and sips. You can audition for the show, schmooze with chefs and winemakers, at say hi to me (or FLAT LESLIE) and have a great night out!

Go to KQED.ORG/LIVE for more information and to buy tickets.

Hope to see you there!

HEY ALL — SO EXCITED TO SHARE THAT SEASON 21 OF CHECK PLEASE! BAY AREA BEGINS TONIGHT ON KQED @7:30PM 📺

Check, Please! Bay Area starts its third decade of episodes with four weeks of flavor-packed finds this April and May! From fermentation-forward bites in San Jose to New Orleans-inspired comfort in Los Gatos and vibrant Thai dishes in Berkeley, the James Beard and Emmy Award-winning series returns with eateries that reflect the region’s dynamic culinary landscape.

At the table, local diners take the lead, bringing their personal favorites into the spotlight and making the case for why they’re worth the trip. Conversations unfold around what stands out, what surprises and what keeps people coming back — from soulful Southern comfort food in Oakland to an immersive, theatrical tasting experience in San Francisco and old-school diner breakfasts in Alameda. Plus, reporter Cecilia Phillips heads to San Francisco’s Chinatown Night Market to take in the flavors, energy and community that define this iconic neighborhood.

This past month has been a good kind of crazy with a week of shooting more Check Please! episodes for season 21 that debuts next week. 📺

Alongside that, I’ve been on the road for work and play. I found two fabulously delicious places to please your palate along the way.

The first is in my hometown of Petaluma in Sonoma County wine country: Brigette Bistro. We recently had it on Check Please! and the guests raved about it. When I was there this month I met a fan of the show who drive an hour and half to visit after watching the episode!

Founded by French Chef Nick Ronan and named for his mother, the food is fab, the vibe joyous, and the desserts decadent. The wine list is curated to perfection. We brought in a crisp, elegant Kutch Chardonnay.

The next, is a place in Los Angeles
Angeles for some of the best ice cream EVER! It’s called Wanderlust and I went twice on a three day visit…it’s THAT good. My favorite was the warm hand rolled Ube cone with deeply purple-hued Ube crunch ice cream. Lickable pleasure. 😂🍦

More to come as I’m on the road again ✈️

As I power into my 6th year of stage four cancer thrivership, I’m hoping to share tools I use — from mindset to meditation, positive self-talk to physical self-improvement — in order to thrive DESPITE my diagnosis. 💪🏼

One of the most important things I do is make sure each day has a take-away. It can be as big as celebrating a positive scan or finding a simple magic moment in an otherwise challenging (or full-on crappy) day. I can succeed at work and have a fabulous filming day or simply say “thank you” or “I appreciate you” to a friend, colleague or stranger who has helped me that day. It doesn’t cost anything to be kind. In fact, many days that is my only take-away and that’s okay.

On this , try making every day this week count…look for OR create moments that make a difference in your life and others. **Can’t wait to hear about YOUR day.

❤️

Ready to eat your way around the Bay? Check, Please! Bay Area keeps season 20 rolling with four weeks of bold flavors. From Kansas City-inspired barbecue in Napa to Swedish street food influenced by Middle Eastern flavors in Petaluma, the James Beard and Emmy Award-winning series returns this February with eateries that reflect the region’s ever-evolving food scene.

Don’t miss the last four new episodes of season 20, Thursdays at 7:30 PM on KQED 9, starting on February 5th:

In Napa at Stateline Road Smokehouse, chef Darryl Bell Jr. brings Kansas City-inspired barbecue to wine country rooted in Bell’s childhood memories and community traditions.
Stockhome in Petaluma offers a casual yet deeply personal take on Swedish street food influenced by Middle Eastern flavors — comfort food that reflects chef Roberth Sundell’s heritage and the multicultural spirit of modern-day Stockholm.
In San Francisco’s Financial District at Bar Sprezzatura, a stylish Italian aperitivo spot inspired by Venice, diners sip classic cocktails and graze on cicchetti with flair against a glamorous backdrop that celebrates downtown San Francisco’s revival.
