His grandfather made moonshine. His distillery makes S.E. Callahan's bourbon, finishing it in Portuguese Madeira casks. Third generation meets the oldest town in Tennessee.

Bev and Doug Root's brother-in-law owns a farm with a 173-year-old oak tree marking the grave of Ewing Young — Oregon's first distiller, a mountain man whose estate sparked the formation of Oregon's first provisional government in 1841. They named their distillery for him. The Heritage Oak Bourbon is sourced from Indiana and finished in Oregon and French oak 125 yards from Young's grave.
