Cowboy Bourbon

Named as the must-try bourbon at the Texas Whiskey Festival, this 6 year Texas bourbon comes in at 73.2% abv. Is it liquid fire? Yes, but it also packs an uppercut of flavor with black pepper, leather and dark fruits. Water is advised but it’s always fun trying these crazy high proof whiskeys.

New to the Distillery Reserve collection is a collaboration with Mars Japanese whisky. Japanese whisky from Komagatake and Tsunuki were added to bourbon where it was left to age for an additional year resulting in a whiskey that is still predominantly bourbon but with some lighter fruit notes, leading to cooked fruits and roasted malt. 🥃

Last but certainly not least was my visit to 🥃

I spent the day with the man, as he and showed us around the distillery. Of course, the main attraction are their stills, with the unique cooling ring the runs water on the outside of the still creating more reflux throughout the distillation process. Really cool to see in person.

Fettercairn is a relatively recent discovery for me and a distillery I’ve quickly become fond of. Last year’s release of their 28 year was one of the best things I tasted that year. Thankfully, I was able to try a number of other whiskies while I was visiting which I very much enjoyed. The 18 year Scottish oak was a standout for me as well as a previous 22 year old release. And at this point it should be no surprise that I took home the handfill which was a PX matured whisky.

Huge thanks to Andrew and team for the visit. We had a great time!

Here’s an interesting one from 🥃

This “blended” scotch whisky was originally supposed to be some 18 year Ledaig. During bottling, a very, very small amount of grain whisky was accidentally added, no longer making it a single malt. Living Souls picked it up and bottled it as a blended scotch and sold it at a fraction of the price. But we know what it really is and it was a no brainer to pick up. It’s even still at 46.3% abv.

The next distillery visit on my trip to Scotland was at 🥃

The day started with a nice lunch and cappuccino at their new visitor center and cafe. From there, we started the tour which began with an unexpected intro to the distillery and its history. No spoilers here. We walked around the distillery grounds, checked out the stills and warehouses and finished up with an epic tasting of some of their best drams. Of course, I had to go home with one of their handfills.
-
has long been an underrated, less known distillery. When you visit you can tell it is very much a traditional, working distillery but that just adds to the charm. I’ve been a fan for many years and they are producing some excellent whisky. These are just some photos I took but I have video that I’m putting together that will show you more.
-
Huge thanks to for showing me around. It was great to meet and I’m glad we got to connect after and share a couple drams. Also thanks to for setting this up. Hopefully we can connect next time I’m out there.
-
Also, I somehow didn’t mention it but I feel like you know….water wheel, water wheel, water wheel.

One of the first distilleries I visited this trip was thanks to . Thankfully Cameron and I were able to meet up the night before for a few drams in Glasgow.

Glengoyne distillery sits in a beautiful, tranquil location next to a small waterfall that feeds water into the distillery. Three stills are on display yet they only do double distillation. The contents of the one wash still are split into the two spirits stills.
-
While they are known for their sherry cask whisky, their white oak release was actually really good and a refreshing change compared to their typical house style. That said, I had to get the handfill while I was there which I believe is a refill Oloroso, 15 years old and 51% abv.

It’s a very fun distillery to visit and worth checking out if you’re near. Huge thank you again to for setting it up and for showing us around!
