We are starting October on a farm, which feels right for a month about knowing what is in your bowl.
In August, Colleen visited the Manuel farm and spent time in the fields with Jody. The photos from that trip landed in our library in early September, and we have been looking at them ever since. There is an oat field running toward the mountains with red equipment parked along the edge. There are cattle spread across the landscape. And there is a shot of Colleen and Jody standing in the rows, talking through the crop.
We share visits like this because a label can only tell you so much. Purity Verified testing tells you what is not in the bag. A farm visit tells you who is behind it, and for us both halves matter. You can scan the QR on your package to see the lab results for your lot, and you can come here to meet the people who grew it.
It also changes how a bowl of oats feels. Once you have seen the field, the cattle out on the land, and the person who checks the crop, breakfast stops being anonymous. That is the whole point of this month.
National Farmers Day falls on Monday, October 12. Consider this our early thank you to Jody and to every grower who lets us walk their fields with a camera.
If you could ask a farmer one question about how your breakfast is grown, what would it be?
