What is Nikka Coffey Whisky?

First things first: Coffey Whisky has nothing to do with coffee. The name comes from the Coffey still, a continuous still patented by Aeneas Coffey in 1830.

Nikka founder Masataka Taketsuru first encountered this style of still while studying whisky making in Scotland in 1919. Decades later, Nikka imported its own Coffey stills to Japan, where they remain an important part of its whisky making today.

More difficult to operate than modern continuous stills, Nikka’s traditional Coffey stills retain more of the character of their ingredients and produce a rich, creamy texture.

The result can be experienced in two distinct expressions: Nikka Coffey Grain, made predominantly from corn, and Nikka Coffey Malt, made entirely from malted barley.

Same still. Two very different expressions of what it can do.

Why build a second distillery when the first is already producing world-class whisky?

Because Masataka Taketsuru understood that great whisky isn’t built from a single style.

He founded Yoichi in 1934 on the rugged coast of Hokkaido, where the environment and traditional production methods produced a bold, robust malt. Thirty-five years later, he opened Miyagikyo in a quiet, forested valley, intentionally creating a whisky with a softer, more elegant character.

Together, these two distilleries gave Nikka something few producers could claim: a broad spectrum of flavors created entirely in-house, providing the depth and versatility that continue to define Nikka whisky today.

Before there was Nikka, there was Scotland.

Nikka’s founder, Masataka Taketsuru, crossed the world to study the art of whisky making at its source, studying at the University of Glasgow and training at several Scottish distilleries. He returned to Japan with the knowledge and vision that would earn him recognition as the father of Japanese whisky, laying the foundation for the industry we know today.

This National Scotch Day, we raise a glass to the country that inspired a whisky pioneer. 🥃

At the Yoichi Distillery, tradition is more than history. It’s still part of the process.

Coal-fired distillation is a demanding craft that requires constant attention from skilled distillers, but it’s a method Nikka continues to preserve. The direct heat helps create the robust, characterful spirit that has defined Yoichi for generations.

**Nikka Perfect Serve 2026 US Update**

You may be seeing some amazing Nikka Perfect Serve activations happening around the world right now, and while we wish we could join in, we won’t be running Perfect Serve here in the US for 2026. It’s a tough one to share, but we’re using the time to plan something even bigger for our return in 2027, and we think it’ll be worth the wait. That said, 2026 is far from quiet. We’ve got some fun activations happening across the US later this year, so keep an eye out here for those. There’s more to come, and we’re so grateful for everyone who continues to love and support Nikka.

Sometimes a vodka martini hits in all the right ways.

Nikka Coffey Vodka brings more to it than you’d expect. Distilled from corn and barley, then refined through white birch charcoal, it gives the drink a little more texture and presence without losing that clean edge.
