Coffee? Not quite. Coffey? Absolutely.

This National Coffee Day, we’re raising a glass of Nikka Coffey Malt, named for the Coffey still invented by Irishman Aeneas Coffey in 1830.

After first learning to distill grain wh**ky on a Coffey still in Scotland in 1919, Nikka founder Masataka Taketsuru brought the first of Nikka’s Coffey stills to Japan in 1963. More than six decades later, these traditional stills remain at the heart of Nikka Coffey Malt.

It all started with apples.

When Masataka Taketsuru founded Nikka in 1934, he knew great wh**ky would take years to mature. To sustain the business in the meantime, the company produced apple juice while waiting for its first wh**ky to come of age.

Those early apple products helped make Taketsuru’s vision a reality, and their place in Nikka’s history is still celebrated today.
