🍂 The Fall W**e Club shipment is almost here!

This release features our 2025 Petite Arvine from Alder Springs Vineyard alderspringsvineyard , a rare Alpine white variety originally from Switzerland. Bright, distinctive, and beautifully suited to the table, this is Six Cloves’ first Petite Arvine and possibly the last vintage from this remarkable vineyard.

The response has already been wonderful. Petite Arvine has quickly become one of the most talked-about w**es since its release, and I have been so happy to see how many people are curious about this little-known variety and have fallen in love with it after tasting it.

The fall shipment also includes new releases and special selections for the season.

Tomorrow night at Flatiron W**es & Spirits in San Francisco! 🍷
I’m very excited to be pouring Six Cloves W**es during Flatiron’s special evening with Jancis Robinson, MW, celebrating the new 9th edition of The World Atlas of W**e.
This is an especially meaningful event for me. The World Atlas of W**e has been one of the books I have studied from over the years, so having the opportunity to pour Six Cloves on the same evening as Jancis Robinson is something I’m really looking forward to.
And I’ll be bringing a great lineup!
The highly anticipated 2025 Petite Arvine will be poured alongside Castanon Vineyard Zinfandel, Alder Springs Vineyard Pinot Noir, Linda Vista Vineyard Chardonnay, and the Bay Area favorite, Beni Chōji Rouge.
Jancis Robinson’s talk, tasting and book signing will take place from 4–6 PM, followed by Six Cloves W**es in the w**e bar from 5–7 PM. Flatiron SF

今年のハーベストは、遅くに入ってきた白ブドウの発酵がとてもゆっくり。

まだまだ収穫期から抜け切れずにいますが、そんな中、少し時間ができた夜にふと思い立ち、実家のある長野県大町市の平林家について調べ始めました。

そこで偶然見つけたのが、平林家の歴史をとても詳しく紹介してくださっているYouTube動画。

新潟から信濃へ移ってきたルーツ、戦国時代に地元の豪族・仁科氏に仕えたこと、江戸時代には大町で塩問屋を営んでいたことなど、今まで断片的に聞いていた話が一つにつながっていきました。

特に驚いたのは、家に伝わっていた「塩不足の際、ご先祖様が加賀まで出向き、新しい塩の流通ルートを開いた」という話。

調べてみると、天保9年（1838年）、大町村の庄屋兼塩問屋だった平林甚左衛門が、松本藩領の塩不足を解消するため金沢まで赴き、加賀塩の買い付けと輸送に尽力した記録が残っていました。

その後、平林家は味噌や醤油の醸造を営み、明治・大正期にはりんご栽培を始め、現在は実家の兄が4代目として続けています。

そして、平林家の家紋は「六つ丁子」。

Six Cloves W**es Sonoe Hirabayashi という名前は、この家紋からいただきました。

ワイン造りとは直接関係のない昔の話のようでいて、商い、醸造、農業と続いてきた家の歴史を知ると、今自分がカリフォルニアでワインを造っていることも、どこか一本の線でつながっているように感じます。

5pm〜7pmまで注がせていただきます🍷

長かったハーベストの終盤に、楽しみなご褒美になりそうです。

This feels like a very special full-circle moment. I immersed myself in the world of w**e through Jancis Robinson’s writing, and JancisRobinson.com recently featured my 2024 Alder Springs Vineyard Pinot Noir.

I am also honored to share a little preview that W**e Enthusiast selected the 2024 Pinot Noir as a Hidden Gem, continuing the recognition that began with my 2023 vintage!

10 vintages. 🥂 Ten years of early mornings, sticky hands, and the special joy that only comes when fresh fruit arrives at the w**ery. I am so incredibly humbled to reach this milestone.

This year hasn’t been easy for our farmers, but I am pouring my heart into every grape to ensure their hard work shines through in the bottle. We just gently pressed our whole-cluster Chardonnay, and the aromas of stone fruit and passion fruit are some of the best I’ve seen since 2018!

Ten years in, we are also keeping things fresh: I’m thrilled to announce we are adding two NEW varietals to the Six Cloves family this year, including a beautiful organic, dry-farmed Petite Sirah from Powicana Farm that I’m making in a rosato style.

Our Fall Club Release opens on September 28th, featuring the 2025 Petite Arvine, 2025 Pinot Noir, and the return of Beni Choji 2.0! To celebrate a decade of w**emaking, we’re offering special welcome gifts and library bottles for new members who join this fall.

9月11日。ソノマは朝から、抜けるような青空。

ただいま収穫の真っ只中、今日も普段どおりワイナリーへ向かい、葡萄の醸しに追われる一日でした。

最初の飛行機がワールド・トレード・センターに衝突した、東海岸時間の午前8時46分。今年も手を止めて祈ることは叶いませんでしたが、あの日を思わなかった年は一度もありません。

できることなら、この日だけは仕事を離れ、静かに過ごしたい。ニューヨークであの朝を迎えた者にとって、9月11日はいまも特別な日です。

あれから25年。

私も年を重ね、あの日のことを口にする人は、ずいぶん少なくなりました。それでも、あのときの街の空気も、目に焼きついた光景も、色褪せてはくれません。
当時の私は、シカゴからニューヨークに移って間もない頃。独特のアクセントにようやく耳が慣れ、丸紅アメリカ本社のあったグランドセントラル駅までの道を、ニューヨーカーらしい早足で歩けるようになってきた時期でした。

2001年9月11日。あの朝も、今日と同じ、雲ひとつない初秋の空。

郊外のウェストチェスターからいつもの通勤電車に揺られてマンハッタンへ。8時35分頃にオフィスに着き、決しておいしいとは言えない備え付けのコーヒーを淹れて、さあデスクに、というその瞬間でした。

食糧部門で穀物のトレードをする同僚がいた私のフロアでは、マーケット情報を流すテレビが一日中ついていました。その画面が、突然、緊急ニュースに切り替わりました。
「ワールド・トレード・センターに、小型機らしきものが衝突」

第一報はそんな内容でした。

34階、北向きのオフィスから現場は見えません。それでも直線距離にすれば、わずか5キロほど。「いったい何をやっているんだ」。まだ不慮の事故だと思い込み、コーヒー片手に画面を眺めていました。

それから20分と経たない午前9時03分。2機目が南棟に突入した瞬間、その場にいた誰もが悟りました。これは事故ではない、と。

日本の実家では、ちょうど甥の誕生日を祝っている最中。すぐに連絡を入れて無事だけは伝えたものの、マンハッタンから出る手立てはありません。主要道路は封鎖、公共交通機関は全面停止。上空を旋回していく戦闘機。足の裏から凍りついていくような恐怖でした。

幸運だったのは、その日に限って車で通勤していた同僚の友人がいたこと。車を停めていたイーストサイドまで歩き、唯一通行できた橋を渡って、彼女の自宅があるブロンクスにたどり着いたのは、夕方5時を回った頃。テレビが繰り返し映し出す惨状を前に、世界がもう後戻りできないところへ来てしまったことを思い知らされました。

翌日、上司の指示で、一部運行を再開した電車に乗り、ふたたびマンハッタンへ。

街は、焼けた鉄と瓦礫が混ざり合ったような、それまで嗅いだことのない匂いに覆われていました。人影の消えたオフィスに出社したのは、私ひとり。

窓の下には灰をかぶった道路が広がっています。その光景を横目に、日本との業務連絡をひたすら続けていたことを、いまでも鮮明に覚えています。

丸紅のメインバンクのひとつだった旧富士銀行、現在のみずほ銀行につながるニューヨーク支店は、よりによって飛行機が突入した南棟にありました。日本人行員も現地スタッフも、大勢の方が犠牲になっています。私が住んでいたハーツデールやその周辺でも、多くの命が失われました。

毎朝、同じ電車に乗り合わせ、たまたま隣に座っていた人たち。あの中にも、帰らなかった人がいたのではないか。そう想像するたび、胸が締めつけられます。
ただ、あの日を境に、少しだけ変わったこともありました。

普段はタフで、他人と一定の距離を保つニューヨーカーたちが、互いに声をかけ、手を貸すようになったのです。悲劇のただ中で垣間見た、人の優しさと確かな連帯。街がひとつになったように感じられた、短い季節でした。

それでも25年が経ったいまなお、世界から争いは消えません。憎しみと分断が生む悲劇を、私たちはこれからも繰り返していくのでしょうか。

その時のOLは、その後のご縁で、自然と向き合うワインの造り手になりました。土に触れ、葡萄を育ててくださる方々と汗を流し、その土地の恵みを、どなたかの食卓に小さな喜びとして届ける。あの頃とはまるで違う人生を歩んでいます。

奇しくも今年、自分のブランド「Six Cloves W**es」は10年目のヴィンテージという節目を迎えました。だからこそいま、ここまでの軌跡を振り返りながら、これからどう生きるのか、社会の中で何ができるのかを、あらためて真剣に見つめ直しています。

あの日、亡くなられたすべての方々に、心からの哀悼を捧げます。

9月11日を、過ぎ去った出来事として風化させないように。平和への願いを胸に刻んで、これからの日々を誠実に生きていきたいと思います。
