A week of learning, inspiration and networking, the 36th annual California Small Farm Conference features over 60 events, online and in-person around the state, for anyone who's involved in the small farm community: experienced growers, aspiring entrepreneurs, market managers, students of agriculture, local food activists and more!

This year’s workshops explore everything from farm cooperatives to ecological pest management, making local food more accessible to small business management, including a full day Spanish language track.

Let’s talk about how record keeping and business planning are connected to accessing capital, and how understanding the difference in credit products and having the vocabulary to navigate the application process are key components of planning. American AgCredit’s Allison Paap will lead the discussion and show how you can begin creating plans to help achieve the goals of your farm and organization.

Over the last two decades, Farm to School has evolved to take different shapes in different places. In many cases, food hubs/mainline distributors facilitate connections between farmers and K-12 schools, but the Inland Empire has found success by adopting a "Farmer Active" model. This model centers farmers - they are the relationship owners, they are the procurement drivers, they expand on school gardens experiences with real on-farm experiences.

This workshop will feature:
- A three-person panel comprised of a farmer, food hub director, and Child Nutrition Director in conversation about what the Inland Empire's "Farmer Active" model looks like
- Farmer Active vs Farmer Passive
- Case study - farmers owning the relationships with CND's allows for new product development that caters to their needs (pre-sliced produce)

2023 CA Small Farm Conference Workshop Highlight:

The Jewish tradition offers a 5,000 year old system of living in a regenerative, mutually supportive relationship with the land, our communities, and ourselves. Join Jewish Farmer Network co-founder Shani Mink to explore Jewish agrarian wisdom – and the healing that comes from grounding our work with the land in our own wisdom tradition. Every land-based culture has unique insight into how to steward land with care, and we are excited to share what the Jewish tradition has to offer. Learn what the ancient body of Jewish wisdom can teach us about building regenerative agricultural systems built on integrated food justice principles, visionary crop rotation and a culture of reverence for the land.

CA Small Farm Conference highlight: Community Grazing Cooperatives

Monday, February 27 • 3:00pm - 3:45pm

An equity-based, grassroots, community-oriented solution that addresses the risk of fire, engages and empowers the leadership of local indigenous fire ecologists, and builds resilience for high-risk communities in the fire-prone areas of the West.

Participate in this workshop to learn how we can empower communities with education, knowledge and support for the ongoing stewardship of their land and their communities within a healthy fire ecosystem. You can develop collaborative relationships in rural residential neighborhoods to ensure the entire community is investing in creating a fire safe ecosystem using a shared flerd (a combination of sheep and goats) of grazing ruminants. This creates long term, generational sustainability for safety from wildfires as well as local, micro food systems.
