Remember when She Turned Me Into A Newt? Lol. No no. We actually mean the c***r we made. The primary apple in that blend is an heirloom called Newtown Pippin that was quite preferred by Queen Victoria. We usually only give a fancy name to a c***r if it is a blend, but Lilly on our press gang did have a great idea; It’s Pip to be Square. Most likely you will just see this released as Newtown Pippin since it is a single varietal. It’s a green apple that gets a reddish brown cheek in the sun. Often donut or saucer shaped, these apples can also have a very nice butt, as you can see in some of these pictures. A delightful crunch and light tannin gives it a beautiful texture and balance. These apples are organic from The Five Mile Orchard near Corralitos, CA. Martinelli’s is famous for making their sparkling apple c***r from apples of this area and Newtown Pippin specifically. They have canceled and sunsetted many contracts with growers in favor of cheaper juice with a higher carbon footprint. As a result, many old growth apple trees are being pulled up and burned. This is a devastating loss impacting the community, economy, and sustainability of the area.
