Peri’s Spice Ladle is born out of a passion for exploring food, especially the flavors of my native Indian and Parsi cuisines. Though most will happily devour popular classics at Indian restaurants around the world, the fear of ethnic ingredients and specific techniques often keeps people from trying their hand at much-loved Indian favorites in their own kitchen. A cuisine that’s as old as the ear
liest civilizations; homemade Indian meal habits can be healthful, delicious and rather addictive. Aided by my years of experience in the food industry, Parsi family background and extensive travel, I like experimenting with the versatility of India’s smorgasbord of regional flavors. I create recipes with more global appeal and a healthy touch; something a home cook in any part of the world can put together with simple ingredients and basic spices from their pantry. Even in Indian kitchens around the globe, food trends are rapidly changing. Ancient family recipes are being revamped and simplified by busy working moms and dads to create modern Indian meals. At the other end, international chefs are getting adventurous with India’s classics, presenting dishes that taste fresh on the palate. It’s easy to ‘spice-up’ just about any meal with a few Indian touches. MEET PERI:
I’m a Parsi native of cosmopolitan Mumbai in western India. A culturally diverse city with a population of 19 million, Mumbai is a bustling foodie paradise filled with international and local cuisine choices, coupled with its well-earned reputation for a wide variety of street foods. Growing up, Mum’s home-cooked delicious Parsi food with its historic influences and stunning flavors set the stage for my love of food. While Parsi-style Indian food was the norm at home, Dad had just one food rule (who am I kidding, he had many rules but we liked this one,) ‘when we travel around the world, we must sample the local cuisine offerings of that city.’ My sisters and I carry that sentiment true to this day. Ten years in the hospitality industry working for the Taj Group, one of India’s finest luxury hotel chains, gave me the opportunity to gain valuable professional industry experience. Now living in America with my husband and two kids, for the past decade and a half, we’ve been promoting our versatile cuisine. Our most recent catering venture was in the SF Bay Area – Spice Ladle, serving corporate clients fresh flavors for the past 4 years. From vegan to vegetarian, gluten-free to dairy-free and meaty kebabs to meatless Mondays; if you’re looking for newer and healthier food choices to match your lifestyle: the answer lies in Indian food. While here, walk through a variety of recipes to find your Indian-inspired favorites. To quote a popular Parsi phrase proclaiming that a meal is served ‘Jamva Chalo Ji.’ Let’s go eat!
