Then there was 4. It seems of the original 12 turkeys hatched, I kept 2 jakes and 2 hens. They are only 3 months old though. After an owl issues and losing the second 5, I did scramble for some more. Currently I have 6 more bourbon reds and 2 blue slates in brooders. I’m hunting 2 more blue slates though.

With that said, at this point the incubator is put up til the spring. Unless someone needs me to incubate for them. I do have 5 khaki Campbell ducks available but no one has shown interest. They are 6 weeks old. Unless someone preorders Campbells I won’t incubate any more duck eggs. Not many even want to buy duck eggs for eating.

In a few months I’ll have the turkeys available that won’t be in my breeding program. So if this something your looking for let me know and I can start a list.

Cattle is still in the works. A lot of fencing still needs to get done and things cleared. But in time they will get back.

Newest adventure, to take this shell of a camper, since it’s been gutted, and turn it into what I’m deeming now the poultry prison for a he chickens and the turkeys. If I can make it good it might the poultry palace. Or the name may get scrapped to something completely different. On to replace some wood and divide it up. Anyone got recommendations on automatic doors, especially ones big enough for turkeys?

The backyard local tsc I swear. Finally getting the turkeys to eat, and I got the handicap one inside cuz he has some feet and leg issues. Got him taped up and he looks like a duck. I might need to put him in the duck tank.

Day 28 …. Hatch day!!!

Well the totals are in. And this was a bad go. Shows the true farming lifestyle. The last duckling hatched between 11pm- 3am. He’s staying in the incubator. The hand hatched Turkey is too weak and I believe it’s got failure to thrive. It hasn’t gotten up to move or anything no matter what I’ve tried to do. It’s still in the incubator. 1 Turkey egg hasn’t hatched so I think it’s dead. I saw no movement when I removed the hatchlings.

In total all 7 ducks have hatched. And I got 7 turkeys hatched. I believe I’ll lose the one and the other like said is dead in the egg. The evil ducklings went to the brooder last night as they were tearing feathers out of the weak Turkey and beating it up. They were smashing everyone when they ran around.

The 6 turkeys went out to the brooder this morning. Everyone has feed and probiotics and electrolytes in their water. I know look like rural king and tsc with tanks full of different poultry in my garage under heat lamps.

Off to work to see what I come home to in the morning. I’m gonna say I’m not too impressed with this Turkey hatch this time from the 13 shipped eggs I got.

Well this morning has been interesting. And I’m just a dummy. I’ll admit it. I ended up buying some clearance chicks the other day so they are in my garage in a brooder. The 1 month old turkeys got moved to the garage. Yesterday I came home for chores and had 4 duck and 2 Turkey eggs pipped. The 1 turkeys had half its beak out. I came in today and find all 8 - a month old turkeys running my garage. They got out. That was fun.

But on to the eggs. I come home to 1 Turkey hatched and 1 duck. Mr Turkey that was hanging out yesterday had not progressed. And his membrane was turning brown and green. Well now I have 2 ducks hatched and 2 turkeys since i had to assist. Now it’s rush time to get t to the feed store to get feed before they close. All other eggs are pipped with a few working their zip around. I hope they all hatch today quickly so I don’t have to worry come tomorrow when I’m at work.

Day 25 - LOCKDOWN

Well this morning is the start of lockdown for the turkey and duck eggs in the incubator. Of what was set the 9 duck and 13 Turkey, there’s 7 duck left moving fantastic with 1 internal pip already, and 8 Turkey, wirh 6 moving like crazy and 1 internal pip. 2 of them have very little movement, which has me watchful and concerned. And of course with the job change, and my bad scheduling, I’ll be at work when most would be expected to hatch.

I anticipate to start seeing baby’s on the 12th if they have their internal pips already. And I do expect to have some born on Monday, probably the two late bloomers that I’m watching closely.

After these I’m gonna throw in some barn yard mixed chickens. Chickens only incubate for 21 days so I won’t have to wait as long. This process has been a new one. After the chickens the incubator will be sterilized and packed away unless someone needs some eggs incubated. Stay tuned for pics and videos again.

Day 15….

3 Turkey eggs have stopped developing somewhere between day 7 and day 12. I did just pull those 3 eggs and will crack them later today to see the development. So in total of the shipped Turkey eggs I have 4 that stopped development after day 3 and 1 came infertile.

I was going to relate the issues to the incubator, but the 7 duck eggs are developing fine as are the remaining 8 Turkey eggs. They will get checked again on lock down which is day 25.

One of the downfalls of shipping eggs is how rough the process is on the eggs. There’s really about a 50% hatch rate. This farm said they have a 75% hatch rate with their eggs. Well this go around isn’t as successful as the first.

I do hope I have a couple of full reds remaining in these 8. For those who have asked for turkeys, once these hatch we can arrange something. Instead of May babies you may get some of the April fools babies that should be ready for outside.

Day 7 of the May babies-

As stated a week ago, I set 9 duck eggs from the farm and 13 Turkey eggs that were shipped in. I dated all duck eggs when they were laid and the 3 Turkey eggs I marked that I had suspicion on. Those 3 eggs had a small chip, and 2 had issues with their air sack being very loose. This is something that happens with shipped eggs. I spoke with the farm prior to shipping and did my research, and it’s stated that 50% of shipped eggs will not hatch and the farm stated they have a 75% hatch rate on their shipped eggs.

Well, today on day 7 I candled the eggs. I also did it on day 3 and found a few I thought were infertile. I gave things a few days to be safe. Duck eggs from days 7 and 15 were infertile. 8-14 are developing amazing and so clear to see.

Of the Turkey eggs I also pulled 2, the one with the chip in it as I suspected it to be infertile and today after opening it I did not see any advancement, so it’s confirmed infertile, and I also pulled another egg as shown below that has what is called the red ring of death. This means, it started to develop, but then stopped for some reason. Once the blood vessels begin to decompose they settle in a ring like this. I’m laughing because we know I started with 13 Turkey eggs the first time, and now this set had 13. I’m gonna say 13 is not my lucky number.

The Turkey eggs are thicker and speckled so it’s alittle harder to see the best details when candling them. But the remaining 11 all have advancements. The remaining 2 that had issues with the air sack are still inside and developing even though it’s read they would not advance.

In another week we will candle again and see how much further we have advanced.

Well come home from work to my biggest fear….escape artists. It’s time for a lid. And of course 1 of the 2 had to the the ol Holy one. Didn’t think at almost 3 weeks old they would learn to fly and get up on my desks. You can always tell when something is wrong by how loud they are when you open the door. Yeah they went and explored the office and my bedroom and my living room and half bath. Well gives me a reason now to mop the floors lol!

Well it done happened again, yesterday while I was at work I had a deliver if 12 Turkey eggs, and found a surprise 13th. I started with 13 the last time also. Needless to say, always check your packages fully.

Anyways they sat for 24 hours, I found 3 that are of alittle concern but we will see how they progress. 2 have air cell issues and the 3rd has a little chip. We may get lucky.

Anyways, the timer is on the count down now. 28 days for them to start hatching. Currently I have them set inside with 9 Rouen duck eggs from my farm. We shall see how everything progresses throughout.

I do know I have some buying the 2 week old turkeys, and i believe 6 of this set are going to new homes. I also have someone who wants some of the ducks. If you want to discuss bourbon red turkeys and or any remaining ducks, let me know. After this process I will try chicken eggs so I will have some barnyard mixes available also, the chickens are more an experimental process.

Incubator Is disinfected and running, holding all the settings for the next round of bourbon red eggs arriving today. So Saturday or Sunday depending on the shippers orders will they go in with about 6 duck eggs to see if they ducks are reproducing as I suspect. So again in about 30ish days new life should be born again on the farm.

That means I’ll have a handful of Turkey poults available for sale and maybe some ducks. The ducks though may be accounted for already. Once the new set hatches, I’ll have and idea what will be kept for breeding and then what will be available for sale. There’s a good chance I’ll have some 5-6 week old ones and then some 1-2 week old ones.

Almost 2 week update on the turkeys.…

One gave me some concern, but after some deep investigating, I lm going to say I relate it to the bedding. I believe he got some in his eye and it was hurting and he couldn’t see. It shows not to use the internet because I was looking more at the worst case genetics and was getting ready to cull the poult.

At 2 weeks, they have become messing. They are also very flighty even though I try to handle everyone daily. They are very vocal especially at night when they go to feed. Their feeder and waterer got upgraded to a bigger size as they are now going through it quicker and it’s not lasting 24 hours. Everyone is filling out well. And yes the Holy one is still around.

I do have 12 more eggs ordered and being shipped. The downfall with shipped eggs is about 50% make it. From the communications I’ve had with others, it sounds like about 12 poults are wanted so there’s a chance I may have a few more to sell. Hopefully the new eggs will go in tomorrow or Saturday and then almost a month later they will be here also.

I do hope this breeding program goes well and the quality of the birds is great. I’ve read both sides, but I can say after Easter, the reviews I had on the farm fresh Turkey I raised, were amazing, and even my nephew who doesn’t like Turkey has picked the Turkey over the ham. I would say come Christmas I’ll have a review on the Kentucky red turkey and it’s quality.
