Sunflower planting is a go. We are producing hundreds of acres of sunflowers this year. They will be scattered from North Judson to South of San Pierre. The seed will be used for bird food. Enjoy the flowers this summer!

The spring mint planting season has come to a close. We had a great start and were a half a day from finishing when the monsoons hit. But we got out there today and finished up!
Potato planting also got going before the rains, and after a long pause, started back up yesterday.

What’s old is new again. Grain sorghum also know as milo, hasn’t been grown on our farm for 25 years. It looks similar to corn until the top pops and grain forms instead of a tassel. Milo is the small round redish grain found in many bird seed mixes. That’s where ours will end up. Milo harvest should finish up this week.

The push was on all week to get as much low ground muck corn out as we could with the heavy rains in the forecast. A few hours left! Pictures were captured by Larry Sr who’s running a semi today.

Thanks to the local volunteers at Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department Knox, IN for helping us out last night. The operator located burning bean dust throughout the side of the combine. Luckily no extensive damage this time. Emissions control systems on modern engines get so hot, they can start lingering crop dust on fire. That was believed to the culprit. We carry “water can” and dry chemical fire extinguishers on the combines, but they were quickly depleted. A few days ago a sticky brake on a different machine started crop dust on fire and burned up a large wiring harness. Fire danger when it’s this dry is a real concern to harvest crews.

The team that w**ds mint together wins together🏆. It’s been a long and hot summer. These young men have worked really hard to get stronger and compete. A lot of kids would be putting it into cruise control to wind down the month of July before full pads start in August, but not these kids from North Judson. They’re up at the crack of dawn to help w**d mint for Wappel Farms 🚜. Hydrate up fellas we got middle school camp tonight! 🏈 Big shout out to Eric Wappel for helping some kids make some cash 💰.

The spring mint planting season is now done. 90 wagons loads of mint roots were dug taking a 6’ wide swath at 2 mph. 130 planter loads were filled, planting a 12’ swath at 5.5 mph. Mint takes much more time and labor to plant an acre than corn or soybeans.

We are glad to bring this planting season to an end and turn our focus to the grain side of things!
