As fall is upon us, it feels appropriate to share some of what we have been up to. Pumpkin season is in full swing and despite expanding our varieties, our yield is admittedly low. This seems to be a product of the drought we found ourselves in during the warmer months. Fingers crossed for more next year. Maybe we will finally achieve our dreams of growing one of those huge pumpkins.

Sweet peas anyone? My first attempt at growing these beauties and after many many setbacks, I am happy to finally see them spring to life.

The Snapdragons are still not totally convinced on the whole "growing straight" kinda thing, but I was lucky enough to pick this lovely little bouquet from the gardens this weekend.

Farmer Jeff's solution to weeds growing between planting rows has (and probably will always be) the trusty rototiller. Sure it might wack a few bean plants to death and not serve as a permanent solution to managing weeds, but laying down ground cover takes longer...right?

(I also happen to believe that the rototiller looks like a mechanical pig. Please tell me I'm not alone in this 🐷)

THE STORY OF THE MIRACLE RHUBARB PLANT - A lesson on not giving up on almost dead plants

Once upon a time, only this past spring, Farmer Jeff was sick and tired of listening to his daughter ask him to purchase some rhubarb plants. Giving in, he purchased two rhubarb crowns. Unfortunately for him, agriculture is unpredictable and, due to many things happening all at once, he was delayed and forgot to plant the rhubarb. Upon finally getting around to planting the rhubarb, he was dismayed to find the two little crows of precious rhubarb all wilted up and dead in their box. For a moment, he considered tossing them out. There seemed to be no hope. But rhubarb is not cheap, and his daughter would kill him, so he planted them anyway, hoping for the best and expecting nothing. A week or so later, he and his daughter were watering the greenhouse in the garden when he noticed it.

"It lives! It lives!" he cried, bounding over rows of planted squash, cabbage, and beans. His daughter, half expecting a mutilated and mangled creature to rise from beneath the ground in a Mary Shelly-est turn of events, turned around to see what all the fuss was about to find him crouched down in front of a tiny green speck at the far corner of the garden. "What?" she asked.

"I forgot to pant the rhubarb and it was on the brink of death when I finally did. The other plant is dead, but this one survived. "It's a miracle rhubarb!" he explained, clearing away small weeds from the base of the plant. And so it was, a miracle rhubarb that is still growing well (at least to my knowledge). She has been named Ruth, and we love her. Featured is a video of Cassidy shielding her from the remains of her dear friend who suffered a different fate.

Wishing Farmer Jeff a super special Father's Day! I am so lucky to call this incredible human my father. He is the one who taught me the importance of humor when things go wrong and how to find the beauty in little things whether it is a porcupine hiding out in a tree, a toad in the lilac bush, or an oddly shaped tomato. He has taught me everything I know about farming and has been a huge pillar of support. I truly could not imagine a world without him.

I have been working on a new project for the past few weeks at Ramblin' Vewe Farm. Just past the chicken coup, where the big spruce tree once stood, is a brand new garden that strives to mix decorative planting schemes with food production in a creative and welcoming way. It features vegetables such as red cabbage, tomatoes, and zucchini. Herbs like creeping time, parsley, and mint, and flowers such as sunflowers, zinnias, and snapdragons. It is not close to finished, gardens never are, but I am incredibly pleased with the progress.
