🥩 They turned farmland into subdivisions… and now everyone wonders why beef prices are so high.

When you replace the people who raise food with houses and pavement, the supply disappears. Farmers didn’t cause the shortage — we’re the ones trying to keep food on the table.

This is really becoming an issue around our own farm, hopefully people will begin to understand when you see fields start to grow houses it affects more than what they think.

Urban sprawl. Illegal dumping onto farms. Neighbor complaints. It’s all part of what happens when the city pushes farther into farmland.

Here’s the thing — farmers aren’t the problem. Most of the land they work on is actually owned by investment groups and developers, leased back to farmers until it’s “time to build.” That’s what the Urban Development Boundary (UDB) here in South Florida is supposed to protect — it’s literally the line between agriculture and asphalt.

But every time that line moves, we lose more of the green space that feeds us. We lose family farms. We lose local food.

So the next time you think about moving to the country for peace and quiet, please remember — you’re moving to someone’s workplace. Respect the people who feed you. Protect the farmland that sustains us. Because once it’s paved, it’s gone forever.

📍This photo says it all: where the farm view meets the sprawl.

Homestead, Florida — where farmland can sell for upwards of half a million dollars per acre.
Huge thanks to my friends at Dade County Farm Bureau & Torbert Farms for the tour and for raising awareness about the serious challenges facing growers in South Florida and beyond.
