Sunday Oct.9th 2016!!
At the Doubletree Hotel in Farmers Branch Texas….when we woke up to our Yukon on blocks in the parking lot!🙄
The OU game was at 11o’clock & it was perfect weather!!
Hot & Spicy!😆
After such a great win…of course we stayed and enjoyed the Texas State Fair….not having to slink out like a few years (2013) back….lol…. when Steve wore his Famous “Keep Mack Brown” Shirt!🤣 (Mack was struggling big time)
And then OU lost that game.
Steve almost had to turn his tee inside out to get out of the stadium!
We were laughed right out of the gates & even the little kids were pointing & cracking up!😆😆
Mortifying!🤪🤦🏻♀️😂
Fast Forward to the 2016 Red River Rivalry!!
An 11:00am OU game and an incredible win over Texas….on another perfect day!
Of course we stayed at the Texas Fair until dark!
Celebrated with everyone in crimson & cream & that year we were riding high!!
Driving back to our hotel late that evening…I even commented on all the used tire places on Henry Hines and around Farmers Branch.🤪🤦🏻♀️
We parked in the “fenced” lot close to the OU Cheerleader Bus & all the decked out OU vehicles!
The front area was full and we even commented on the lack of choices to park near the doors.
Inside the hotel was nuts!
Cheering & celebrating late into the evening. So fun!
Imagine our surprise upon waking up the next morning & seeing our car on blocks.
From the 11th Floor….Steve opened the curtains and looked down.
Was that really our car?
Well…. The front rotors were on blocks- the back axle was resting on a small bottle jack.
At the Doubletree Hotel no less!
Sunday morning was the beginning of a long couple of days!
Of course the hotel “assumed” zero responsibility…..even though they had an outdoor security guard that “traveled “ the parking lot in a golf cart all night.
The “Cameras” mounted on all the light poles in the lot “weren’t working” …..unknowing to us when we parked in the FULL lot.
Full of OU fans & alumni-including OU buses.
WOW.
Funny side note-The police officer that took the report gave Steve a handful of business cards for “used” tire shops in the area.
What entailed next…
After no help from the hotel….
Find a rental car place open on Sundays.
Find a ride to an open rental car place.🤪
(Reluctantly asked the hotel concierge to get us a ride-as we had had a few very heated discussions with the hotel managers & staff that morning)🤣🥴
Rent a vehicle large enough to accommodate 4 tires.😂
(Luckily Enterprise found us a truck after a searching for a several hours for us.)
Find 4 tires.
Find 4 Wheels.
Find a dealership open that had 4 tires.
Find 4 wheels.🤣
(There were none with a set of 4)
And None on Sundays.
On Monday we managed to locate 1 dealership with 2 wheels/tires.
We found another dealership with another 1 within 40 miles of us….yay…... lol
Fun Fact….The nice Enterprise guy had told us on Sunday if we went online and searched the used tire places we might find our own set listed that day🤦🏻♀️🙄🤪
We think we did.
There was a place that just had listed them-$900….when we called…no answer.
The call back was immediate and the inquiry was “what did we call that number for?”
(Code…?😉)
“Asking for used 4 Denali tires” was our answer and the guy said he would meet us in an hour.
I wanted to go in guns blazing….(With Steve as my backup…🤪) but we decided to have officers go instead.
Well…. That was a fail bc apparently they don’t just do that.
And now we were advised not to go that route.
By the police!
Ultimately we just left that idea alone-not having “proof” and no support from the police in the area.
What a joke.
(We did find out later that the VIN number would have matched the Yukon bc the tires were factory installed)
It ultimately took us until late Monday evening to cobble together a set of 4 wheels/tires to get back home.
We couldn’t wait another day or two for them to order a new set for us to travel.
(4 Denali Wheels/Tires weren’t an InStock item.)
The last tire used was the spare….which the thieves graciously left.
When we finally had enough wheels to call AAA, the kid had to call for a backup team with extra jacks to help secure the vehicle to keep it from tipping over!
Ultimately it took Steve and those 2 “professionals” to figure it out.🙄
We got away from that hellhole late Monday evening and drove home on a wing and a prayer….
And No Spare!🥴🥴🥴
While all of this was happening….we still had to stay at the scene of the crime …🤣🤣….& the Hotel was adamant they had no intention of compensating us, offering every excuse under the book to us- & we also had no way of storming out to prove a point! 😆😆😆
Besides we couldn’t leave our Yukon there overnight in a now empty lot….after checkout from all the OU fans earlier Sunday morning.
The Hotel “graciously allowed”us to stay the extra night and ultimately they did comp us Sunday night ONLY!
What a crock!
Suffice to say-we have NEVER stayed again.
At any Doubletree.
Anywhere.
Our great insurance guy took care of us (still does❤️) & it was pointed out that this could ended much worse.
It was apparent that whoever did this- did not play around the way they left the lug nuts & such….
These were “professionals”and most likely it took less than 10 minutes to get the tires- with a lookout because there was so many people at the hotel.
What if a OU cheerleader had ran out to the bus late that evening for something?
Or someone else had stumbled on to the thieves.
Glad Steve didn’t make 1 more trip out to the car for something late that night either❤️
It could have been a much worse event.
That experience changed how we now travel & how we choose places to stay…..
And just have to say….our Rt66 travels usually test us.
A hundred year old area means old aging downtowns….and a lot of sketchy areas.
We are still a little gun shy & read ALL the reviews…pay extra for better parking & our stays….and try to control our environment best we can.

Not sure if that now works but surely “lightening doesn’t strike twice” right? 🤪🤪
