Some tender little things I got to put my hands on today. As a mostly greens growing farm, that hailstorm last night was spooky. Most of the beds are covered and hooped for that reason but I was so relieved to see this morning that the big uncovered head lettuce plantings snuck by with no damage.

The frequency of sudden weather-related setbacks are so common in farming that escaping one has similar side effects to a near death experience. Gratitude! Shaky hands. A piercing joy that lasts for hours.

Some spinach ASMR for you cuties…harvest is satisfying because it engages all of your senses. The colors of the leaves, the smell of the soil, the snapping feeling of the leaves, the crunching sound. The flavor of a spinach leaf in peak spinach season right off the plant! It’s easy to get lost in the rush rush rush of a busy harvest morning. But a tranquil moment is always available.

For the past 6 years the semi truck compost delivery day has been my most dreaded day of the year. Getting a semi truck safely through a swamp is no easy feat. Thanks to and Alpine Gem Excavation, I can finally get bulk compost safely onto the farm. THANK YOU ZAC!

I prefer deep mulching to grow soil life and control weeds, I use 120 yards of compost on my beds every year. They have a range of products, this is the “cleanest” compost they make—it’s made primarily out of yard waste and doesn’t incorporate any wastewater byproducts. And it’s OMRI listed, which qualifies it for organic certification.

Farms export nutrients from their soil through their crops with every sale. The most significant challenge of agriculture since its invention is how to get those nutrients back. Whether by mined rock phosphates, blood meal from slaughterhouses, or compost from yard waste, all farms have to find a way to bring those nutrients back to the soil. I’m sooooo grateful I can now use semi trucks to make those imports more affordable.

FIRST HARVEST WHAT A RIDE

One hailstorm, very numb hands, and a half assembled wash station later, we find ourselves with our first harvest behind us. First harvest is always a bumpy ride, feels good to rip the bandaid off and start moving away from “frantically plant everything” and into “desperately harvest what you already planted while continuing to plant everything”

Happy Mother’s Day to all beings that create or foster life. Whether you are the bird, nest, shell, or the worms. It takes all of us.

You are correct, I am abandoning those wire hoops for MAX two weeks until these cuties vacate and IF they are late to leave I WILL do nothing about it

If you find some lupine in your cover crop and you have to mow it, you are morally obligated to wait for it to bloom then pick one last bouquet.

Lesser known factoid about lupine—they are legumes and therefore bring atmospheric nitrogen down into the soil via their roots nodules. So actually a great coincidence to find in your cover crop.

COFFEE TALK ✨✨☕️☕️☕️

On physical health and the unfair reputation of manual labor. With my work, I can do things to prevent long term problems like go to physical therapy, eat well, manage stress and sleep, exercise. In pregnancy you can do all those things and still have chronic issues that arise just because you got unlucky. Everybody criticizes the career farmer for being unwise with their body, but nobody criticizes a would-be mother. I’ll end my favorite Anthony Bourdain quote: “Your body is not a temple. It’s an amusement park. Enjoy the ride.”

Check back in 20 years to see if I eat my words about farming and physical health. But today, I’m enjoying the ride and feeling lucky to be on it.

✨✨✨☕️☕️✨✨ a vulnerable postpartum coffee talk for you cuties! Pregnant farming was humbling in every capacity, and getting humbled is a really big part of working in agriculture, so par for the course baby! Through the past decade working on farms I’ve always been able to count on my body as my ultimate farm tool. It definitely strengthened my business to have that tool be compromised, and to some extent I planned for it. I did not expect or plan to lose my short term memory and most decision making processes. I don’t farm with my romantic partner, I was mostly a one woman show until this year! I wish I had invested harder in farm labor sooner, so I could have delegated decision making through this process. Again and again I come back to the realization that farmhands make or break the farm; the humans are the ultimate source of the long term sustainability of a farm. It’s the people, baby! You can have the richest soil in the world but if nobody is there to harvest from it, it’s just dirt.
