🌿 Fresh hop season is almost here! đŸș

One of our favorite times of the year is just around the corner. The hops are nearly ready, and if Mother Nature cooperates, we’ll be brewing with fresh-picked hops before you know it. The farm is trying a kiln on Monday to see where the Amarillo crop is at and we’ll likely be picking next week!

There’s nothing quite like the vibrant aroma and unmistakable character of a true fresh hop beer. It’s a tradition we look forward to every harvest, and we can’t wait to share this year’s release with you.

Stay tuned
 harvest is almost here. đŸ»

đŸș Coming Early November: Fresh Hop Pale Ale

Once a year, we get the chance to brew with one of the freshest ingredients imaginable—wet (fresh) hops. Unlike traditional hop pellets, these Amarillo hops will travel from a Boundary County hop yard to our brewhouse in about six hours, preserving vibrant aromas that simply can’t be captured any other time of year.

To let these incredible hops shine, we’re simplifying our Pale Ale recipe by dialing back the specialty malts, creating a clean canvas for bright citrus, orange, grapefruit, floral, and fresh-picked hop character.

We’ll gently steep the freshly harvested hops in hot wort for hours before returning it to the kettle for a light sanitation step, preserving as much of their unique character as possible.

This year’s Fresh Hop Pale Ale is also headed to the North Idaho Brewers Cup, where we’re honored to be one of just six breweries selected to compete.

Fresh hop beers happen only once a year—and once they’re gone, they’re gone. We can’t wait to share this one with you this November!

đŸș Coming This November: Monthly BJCP Beer Education at Utara Brewing!

Have you ever wondered how beers win medals or what judges are actually looking for in a competition?

Beginning in November, Utara Brewing will host monthly BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) study sessions at our Pub on Pine. These sessions are open to anyone interested in learning more about beer—whether you’re a homebrewer, craft beer enthusiast, or simply curious about what makes one beer different from another.

We’ll explore beer styles, brewing ingredients, off-flavors, sensory evaluation, and the science behind brewing exceptional beer. You’ll also learn how beers are judged in competitions using the internationally recognized BJCP Style Guidelines.

Beer competitions don’t judge every beer against each other—they evaluate how well a beer represents its intended style. Understanding those standards helps brewers make better beer and helps drinkers appreciate the incredible diversity of craft beer.

No experience is required—just a curiosity for great beer and a willingness to learn.

Stay tuned for dates and times, and join us this fall as we build a community of beer lovers dedicated to learning, tasting, and enjoying craft beer together.

Cheers from all of us at Utara Brewing! đŸ»

đŸ„ˆ Another medal for Utara! đŸ»

We’re excited to share that our Selkirk Vienna Lager earned a medal at the Ales for the Centennial Trail Beer Festival in Coeur d’Alene!

Not only was it an incredible day celebrating great beer, but the festival also helps raise money to support and improve the Centennial Trail—a cause we’re proud to be part of.

This marks our second award in as many months, and it’s a reminder that all the hard work, attention to detail, and passion we pour into every batch is paying off.

To everyone who has supported us by sharing a pint, bringing friends, and believing in what we do—thank you. Awards are wonderful, but your support is what makes them possible.

If you haven’t tried our award-winning Selkirk Vienna Lager yet, stop in and see what the judges—and our customers—are talking about.

Cheers to great beer, great trails, and an amazing community! đŸ»

We just published a new article on the Utara Brewing blog, and it’s all about one of the most important—and least understood—ingredients in beer: grain.

While hops often steal the spotlight, every great beer starts with its grain bill. Barley provides the foundation, wheat builds body and foam, oats create that silky mouthfeel in hazy IPAs, and even corn has an important place in brewing crisp, refreshing lagers. Then there are the specialty malts that add everything from fresh bread and biscuits to caramel, coffee, and chocolate.

Award-winning beer isn’t about throwing every ingredient into the mash tun. It’s about understanding what each grain contributes and using it with purpose.

At Utara Brewing, we’re always refining our recipes, combining traditional brewing knowledge with modern science to make every pint just a little bit better than the last.

Check out our latest blog to learn more about the grains behind your favorite beers—and the craft that goes into every batch.

đŸș Cheers!

💹 It’s a little windy out there today

The upside? The wind chased the wildfire smoke away, and it’s a beautiful afternoon to enjoy a beer outside.

Our back patio is filling up with friends, cold pints, and plenty of fresh air.

Whether you’re catching up with friends or just looking for a relaxing way to wrap up the day, we’ve got a seat waiting for you.

One of the best parts of being a craft brewer isn’t the beer—it’s the people behind it.

This week, one brewery bailed me out with water minerals. Another helped me out with a fresh brick of yeast. Neither expected anything back. They just wanted to help another small brewery succeed.

That’s the culture that makes craft beer special.

We share ideas, ingredients, equipment, and experience because we know that when independent breweries support one another, our entire community is stronger.

To the breweries that lent a hand this week—you know who you are. Thank you.

I’m proud to be part of an industry built on collaboration, generosity, and great beer. đŸ»

đŸș Now Pouring: Drive Slow or Die Fast American Lager

Some beers don’t need to shout to make an impression.

Our newest lager is brewed to be clean, crisp, and endlessly drinkable—because sometimes simple is the hardest thing to brew well.

Drive Slow or Die Fast starts with a firm, clean bitterness from German Magnum hops before finishing with the delicate floral and herbal character of Hallertau MittelfrĂŒh. Fermented with carefully selected German lager yeast and naturally carbonated to a lively 2.6 volumes of CO₂, every sip finishes bright, refreshing, and ready for the next.

At Utara, we believe great lager is all about balance, patience, and attention to detail.

Whether you’re winding down after work or gearing up for the weekend, this is the kind of beer you’ll want to have another of.
