Some new-to-us type has joined the Crumple Horned Tinkery! 📜

We recently picked up several cases filled with a mix of wood and metal type, adding even more styles and sizes to our growing collection.

There’s something pretty special about seeing all those letters lined up in their cases, knowing they’ve already spent years doing the job they were made for. We’re excited to put them back to work on the press and see what we can create with them.

More type, more possibilities, and plenty more printing ahead! 📚

A special delivery arrived today! 🎉📜

Our brand-new Crumple Horned Tinkery logo printing block is officially here, and we couldn’t be more excited! We haven’t had the chance to ink it up just yet, but it won’t be long before it makes its very first impression.

There’s something incredible about holding a handcrafted printing block that will become part of our journey, creating prints the same way they have been made for centuries. We can’t wait to see our logo come to life on paper and share that first pull with all of you!

Stay tuned… the first print is coming soon!

🎉 Progress Update! 🎉

Another big milestone is complete! After countless hours of scraping, sanding, cleaning, and prep work, this 1902 Chandler & Price printing press has officially received its full coat of primer. 🙌

Now comes the part I’ve been waiting for… 🥁🖤 High-gloss black machinery enamel!

It’s incredible to watch a machine that’s over 120 years old slowly come back to life. There’s still work to do, but each step brings it closer to printing once again.

Thank you to everyone who’s been following along and encouraging this restoration! ❤️ The glossy black reveal is coming soon… 👀

Happy Fourth of July! 🇺🇸🎆

Today we celebrate the moment the Declaration of Independence was adopted and turned bold ideas into something unstoppable. The printing press played a big role. Ink met metal type, paper met pressure, and a message of liberty started spreading across a brand new nation like wildfire.

That is the power of print. It takes an idea and gives it weight, reach, and a voice that carries far beyond the room where it began. ⚙️🔥

Happy Independence Day, and here’s to freedom, courage, and the spark that still keeps those words alive! 🇺🇸✨

🖤 A little paint can make a big difference.

Tonight, the main flywheel on our 1902 Chandler & Price received its first coat of traditional machine gloss black. ✨

It’s only one piece of the restoration, but seeing the finish go on makes this 123-year-old press feel one step closer to printing again.

On to the next piece!

⚙️ Restoration update!

One piece at a time… 🖌️🖌️

The main flywheel on our 1902 Chandler & Price has been stripped of its old paint, cleaned, and primed. It’s a small step in a much bigger restoration, but every finished piece makes this 123-year-old press look a little more complete. ✨🖌️

The bare metal surfaces are masked off and ready for the next step: a fresh coat of traditional machine gloss black. 🖤🖌️

We can’t wait to see this press slowly come back to life.

A little late, but still worth recognizing Gutenberg’s birthday 📚

While he did not invent the printing press, he refined movable metal type and helped develop a system that made printing much more consistent, efficient, and repeatable. That is what truly changed the scale of book production.

Because of that work, books could be produced in greater numbers and at lower cost, helping spread knowledge and ideas much more widely 🌍

📜 We hinted that there was more to come…

Meet our latest adventure: a 1902 Chandler & Price 10×15 Jobbing Press. 🏗️⚙️

Built 123 years ago and weighing in at roughly 1,500 pounds, this cast iron giant made the trip from Seattle and is now awaiting restoration in the Tinkery. 🚚🔨

For over a century, presses like this printed everything from business cards and posters to newspapers and announcements. Soon, we’ll be bringing this piece of printing history back to life.

There is a lot of work ahead, but we’re excited to share the restoration process, the challenges, and hopefully the first prints along the way. ✨

After all, what’s a 1,500-pound printing press between friends? 😄

👑📜 A royal ending to a fantastic weekend at the Sandpoint Renaissance Faire!

We had an incredible time demonstrating the art of letterpress printing, meeting fellow history enthusiasts, and sharing a craft that helped shape the world we know today.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Crumple Horned Tinkery booth. We loved the conversations, the questions, and the opportunity to share our passion for printing history. We also had the pleasure of meeting so many talented vendors and demonstrators who help make the Faire such a special experience. And we were honored to meet the Queen herself! 👑✨

This was just the beginning. More events, more printing, and more adventures are already on the horizon. We look forward to sharing old skills, new discoveries, and a little hands-on history along the way.

More curiosity. More fun. More tinkering. Stay tuned. 📜🔨✨
