Saw-whet

Continuing on with the LA score breakdowns - next up is Wild in Wild DM Saw-whet. I don’t have many productive does in the herd that weren’t born here at this point, but of that small group, 2 are from our friends at Wild In Wild Farm. Why? Because their main focus has always been, and probably will always be, solid production on once a day milking. Something near and dear to my heart. The ELITE designations came from focus on production rather than any sort of plan to create a dynasty.

In the early days of our DHIA career we were in the same group testing cohort so I got to see their ladies in action while supervising milk tests - one doe that always caught my eye was SG Pholia Farm HB Detour VEEE90. I always loved Deets but she was also famously stingy with doe babies. When WiW offered a grand daughter of Deets (only because they had retained littermate sisters) I jumped at the opportunity to bring her here.
So when I say I was 0% surprised that little Saw-whet is KILLING IT on milk test as a first freshener, it shouldn’t be shocking… but to have the appraiser confirm that she is, in fact, very special was validating and exciting. Saw-whet earned a GVVV87 as a ff, with one of the higher mammary scores of the day - 32, 38, 34, with a 33 in MSL. She obviously has a lot of maturing to do but she’s off to a great start (and super sweet to boot). I’m excited about her future.

Poppet

First freshener, Monkey Hill Hello Poppet did really well at LA, earning a VVVV87 (max score for a first freshener is 89). There is a lot to appreciate about this pretty girl - her udder is lovely, although wasn’t that full for LA, she’s got an incredible work ethic, hopping up on the stand every day next to her mama, Twyla. And then of course those wattles 😉 She’s my first freshened Shep daughter and I was not disappointed.

The appraiser appreciated her legs, back, dairyness, and strength. Her mammary scores were 33, 29, 33. She certainly has some more maturing to do (she’s 2) but I’m excited to see how she does on her next kidding in 2028. Her ares of weakness were, again, the damn shoulders although hers were better than most in the herd and her head (narrow).

Poppet is quiet, friendly, and easy on the eyes. And she’s a damn fine milker, too.

Shepherd

I’m going to take a break from talking about the does to give a lil shout out to Monkey Hill NG Shepherds Pie, son of Mud Pie, littermate to Bridie Pie. I love this guy, the first time I clipped him was last summer when he was 3 years old and I could not believe what had been hiding under all that hair! What a freaking hunk he is. Well, I’m happy to say the appraiser was also impressed with him and he earned a VVE88! My home bred boy got the highest buck score of the day ❤️

Shep was commended for his incredible depth of body (a 50 in body depth!) and strength (40) but he really loved his head (E). He also scored an E in back. He did say his shoulders are also slightly imbalanced but not too bad (common ND issue), his rear leg angularity could be better. Oh, and we was NOT overheight (I was worried) but we did have to measure him a few times to be certain. He came in right at 23.5 inches.

But also, Shep is a love bug and so easy to handle. I really appreciate that about him. He’s not pushy, always happy to do his job, and he does it well. I used him pretty heavily 2 years ago so he’ll have several other daughters in milk next spring. His only daughter in milk this year (here) is Poppet, who is really incredible. Shep has a few daughters in other herds that are also doing well on milk test and he should earn his +B (already has *B) once this lactation is completed for Poppet.

I’m so proud of this boy! Included are pictures from LA day and the last photo is the one from his first haircut last summer (he was a little heavier and haircut def more grown out at LA this year).

Bridie

Many know that Bridie is probably my ideal doe. She’s not the friendliest in the herd - she’s friendly enough - but whenever a doe stops me in my tracks in the pasture with her natural beauty, 9 times out of 10 it’s Bridie. She’s gorgeous. Deep bodied, lovely udder. So I will say this is the one score I disagree with but I’m sure it’s because I’m completely barn blind about her. And let’s face it, sometimes the traits you value aren’t the highest on the scorecard - or even on the scorecard at all. This doe has an incredible will to milk and easily did an extended lactation as a first freshener.

the appraiser praised her impressive depth and capacity (46) and really liked her mammary (33, 32, 37). Once again the shoulders haunted us but that was the only A in her scores. She ended up with a GGEE87 - which is still an incredible score, just not what I was expecting. This is why you should go into LA with a completely open mind! But anyway, she’s really lovely and I will continue to be wowed by her every day.

Twyla

Another of the old ladies being appraised this year, Twyla is a 7 yr old 4th freshener, with a couple extended lactations in there. Sweet, quiet, productive Twyla. There’s a lot to love about her, and she’s one of only 2 goats in the herd left from the Blueberry line. She has the best back, and as it turns out, shoulders in the herd - she got the only V in shoulders of the day!

She was praised for her wattles (JK but he did like them), depth, teat size, head, and capacity. Her udder just never really filled out completely for LA but that’s just how it goes sometimes. Her udder scores were 29/28/29.

Twyla is a funny little goat with a glorious lady beard and piercing blue eyes. She received a VGEV88 (her final score earned at 5 yrs was VEEV89).

Another one that has only had a few doelings but I’m happy to have her 2 year old, Poppet, and 2026 doeling Eliza to carry on the line.

Fern

Fern joined our herd last summer when a friend was moving cross country and needed to make drastic herd cuts. I don’t have many does from other herds anymore, but Fern was bred by our friends at Wild in Wild, a very milky herd that is producing some really stellar dairy goats. Adding Fernie was a no-brainer. She’s a powerful milker, an elite list doe, and solid black, which I’m a sucker for. She’s also one of the sweetest goats you would ever meet.

Fernie got a great score, VEEV89, which was only surprising to me because she was also on extended lactation at about 16 months in milk. The appraiser also commented that he would never have guessed she was so far along in her lactation by looking at her if I hadn’t told him and, as with Trixie, didn’t mark her as stale (which apparently keeps the doe’s LA score from impacting the sire’s evaluations).

Fern was praised for her depth, dairyness, udder (FUA 34, RUH 32, RUA 36), lovely head, and back legs. Her faults were that darn shoulder assembly and shorter body.

Fern will also be getting dried up in the next month or two to prepare for breeding this fall.

Trixie
I’m really thrilled with lots of things from Trixie’s appraisal. Despite being 6.5 years old, she’s only a 3rd freshener due to her extended lactations. In fact, her only prior appraisal was at 16 months fresh. I was sad she would get her final score at 18 months fresh this time because I assumed she wouldn’t score as well as I had hoped. Apparently my fears were unwarranted because she looked freaking awesome and the appraiser was pleasantly surprised by how good she looked for her stage of lactation. I was also a little worried she may have gone over height but she was actually just, and I mean JUST, under the limit.

Trixie was also praised for her depth, and her mammary (FUA 33, RUH 32, RUA 37), and her lovely head (and epic lady beard). Her faults were rear leg angulation, and the unbalanced shoulder assembly seen in several other does (she and Sika are maternal sisters).

Trixie is a hell of a producer and really takes her job as a dairy doe seriously. We will need to dry her up pretty soon so she can get a break before breeding and I don’t think she’ll take that well, although she is still feeding her very chubby 18 month old daughter.

The appraiser was so impressed at her mammary considering her length of lactation that he decided not to code her as stale and said if I wouldn’t have told him he’d have never guessed she’d been in milk that long.

Trixie has very strong opinions about everything but I think she’d be happy to know that she got a VEEE89.

Her yearling daughter, Monkey Hill SP I’m a Veronica will also be bred this fall to kid as a 2 yr old.

Sika
Sika has always been one of my favorite home bred does. She’s really lovely and an incredible milker. This year I got a little teary eyed when the appraiser announced her score of VVEV89 - despite other appraisers really liking her, she’s never gotten above an 87 before. She is a doe that I always thought deserved to be 88+. This year at 8.5 years old, Sika proved what a beautiful and powerful little dairy goat she is.

Flaws, again with the shorter lower shoulder bone creating an unbalanced shoulder, and her udder is a bit too deep this year. A little steep in the foreudder attachment (28), but good rear udder height (29), and really nice rear udder arch (40). She also got an E in rear legs. She was praised for her depth (41, although he did say she’s a little more rectangular than we**ie), nice back, and longevity and movement for an elder doe.

Sika is another doe that has been stingy with the doelings over the years but I finally got a nice little keeper doe from her this year. She looks so much like Sika’s dam, my beloved Umaylah (who I called Umi), that I’ve decided to name her Chiisai Umi (which means Little Umi) in hopes that she’ll grow to fill those big hoof prints.

Muddy
I thought I’d make an individual post about each goat and their scores. I’m so thankful to Savanna for taking tons of pictures. There are some great ones!

I’m sure you are all very tired of hearing me talk about Mud Pie, well, tough noogies because she deserves some spotlight today.

Muddy came to us as a second freshener in 2020 when a friend was getting out of goats. I feel so fortunate to have been given the opportunity to add her based on milk records alone, but what I didn’t realize was how bonded we’d become. She is my absolute heart goat.

Now, she’s not perfect. Her attachments are really good but not stellar. She can be a little gangly. But she has matured so beautifully and has an incredible will to milk and is very productive.

She’s very deep bodied (48 in depth) and has amazing capacity in her udder. In fact, she kidded with a single doeling this year (which is shocking after years of having quints or quads) so even though she’s milking really well, she’s nowhere near the volume she’s had in the past so her udder never looks really full this lactation.

Aside from being incredibly patient and agreeable, the appraiser praised her for looking pretty damn good at 8.5 years old! She’s lacking a little rear leg angularity and her lower shoulder bone was a bit short leading to unbalanced shoulder composition. She is one of my foundation does so not surprising that the shoulder trait is consistently lacking in my herd (although other dam lines also had the issue). He praised her head (E in head) and her udder (FUA 35, RUH 33, RUA 35). She was awarded the coveted E in mammary.

Muddy ended with a VVEE90 (she’ll keep her final score earned at 5 years old of EEEV90) which is pretty awesome for an 8 year old doe that kidded with a single!
