Oh, goodness, it was a busy week, topped off by a really busy Saturday! At times, it felt like we were the Whoopie Pie Festival’s annex. So many friendly…and hungry…people! Many thanks for your support! We’re glad that you thought to stop in!

The kitchen is all cleaned up now, the brick oven is cooling down, and the Stand is settled in for a few days of quiet. We’ll reopen the Café on Thursday, 11-2; the Stand will stay open until 5.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend, and stay safe!

Gah!!!! Is it hot or is it HOT?! Even the backs of our knees are sweating.
Let’s take a cue from our Southern friends to soothe this heat-beast with a tall, refreshing cup of Iced Sweet Tea. We’ve steeped a large batch of tea and sweetened it while it’s hot with a good charge of sugar. After a good chill in the fridge, our Sweet Tea is ready to quench your thirst and cool you down. We even have fresh ice cubes to add to this nippy treat. While we Northerners may instinctively turn to iced coffee during a blast of summer heat, the South may be onto something. You can find our Iced Sweet Tea in the Self-Serve Cooler…no Southern drawl needed.

Millions of bees and a well-tended pasture– that’s what it takes to make spectacular honey. That’s why we are very pleased to welcome Sangerville-based Nubik Ranch Honey back to the Stand! Paul Barowski has a passion for producing a unique selection of organic raw honey on his 45-acre Maine Organic Farmers and Growers Association (MOFGA) certified fields. Paul tends both his fields and his bees with a singular focus on high-quality, pure, sweet honey.

We offer three varieties of Nubik Ranch Honey, each with a distinctive hue and flavor: Raw Blueberry, Raw Wildflower, and Raw Clover. At its simplest, you can enjoy these honeys in teas or on toast. But, like fine wines, each honey can be paired with specific foods, both sweet and savory. Try sweetening your baking with Nubik Ranch honey. Drizzle the honey on ice cream, yogurt, or your morning oatmeal. Many meats are enhanced by the addition of honey, especially grilled meat. The uses of honey are endless! Make this summer your “Grand Honey Experience,” as you experiment with all three flavors of Nubik Honey! Bonus: Seniors can buy honey using their Farmshare account!

What do you get when you combine an abundance of mashed potatoes, an inventive confectioner, and a popular minister? If you’re a born and bred Mainer, you know we’re talking about the iconic Needham candy.
There are several fun stories about the origin of the classic Needham candy, a sweet candy with solid roots in Maine. The Needham was a clever combination that included coconut, mashed potato, confectioner’s sugar, and butter. A Portland confectioner named John Seavey started selling this delectable confection in the early 1870s. As the story goes, the quickly popular treat was named after a well-known evangelical minister of the time, the Rev. George Needham. He was a preacher with a great backstory that included an involuntary tattooing and an escape from Patagonian cannibals. (It’s worth looking him up!) Maine housewives were soon making Needhams in their own kitchens, and the candy became a mainstay in our state’s array of truly “original Maine foods.”
Where are we going with this? We are *not* selling Needhams, but in true Mainer fashion, our baker has combined the delight of the Maine Needham with the Whoopie Pie to present you with a wonderfully delicious Needham Whoopie Pie! Yes, there’s coconut, and yes, there’s Maine mashed potato– both combined in a delightfully light and sweet filling…and, no, you can’t taste the potato!
We have our Needham Whoopie Pies clearly marked, but you can also look for the mini chocolate chips in the filling that signal that you’re reaching for this “full-stop” Maine treat. …and just in time for the local Whoopie Pie Festival!

“Homemade.” It’s a word that works hard, here in the Café and Bakery. We take pride in offering made-from-scratch food, from our bakery goodies to our “mixed” salads and soups. Some of our homemade foods are created by individuals, but many of our offerings are a result of teamwork. Our pie crusts are a perfect example of that teamwork. One person on our crew might mix up a batch of pie dough, while another measures out and forms dough balls for yet another person to roll out as pie crust disks. Those disks are laid out in individual pie pans and frozen…but not for long. In a single week during the opening weeks of the season, we can easily go through more than 100 of those crusts to make our pies, quiches, and chicken pot pies. By the peak of the season in mid-summer, we might use upwards of 150+ pie crusts. Is it worth all the effort? Without hesitation, we say, “You bet!”

“What’s next?”
We hear that question all season long, as folks anticipate the progression from one crop to the next. In some ways, it’s very predictable: beet greens come before beets, berries come before corn, and tomatoes come before pumpkins. However, a lot of what happens from week to week depends on Mother Nature. The crops need rain– that’s all of them. Some need the boost of hot days– peppers, for example. Others need cooler weather– we’re talkin’ broccoli or cauliflower here. Frankly, though, it’s mostly about how the weather rolls from day to day.

So...back to the question, “What’s next?” Here’s the short list: A tour of the fields shows that the peas are moving along well (check out the picture!). We may have some fresh peas in the Stand by the end of June (stay tuned!). The strawberries are in bloom, with some plants already bearing small green berries (huzzah!). The lettuces are showing promise, too (yahoo!).

Hang on! The season will be cranking at full speed before we know it. Until then, we’re all anticipating the unbeatable flavor of fresh food from the fields!

We are honored– and beyond delighted!– to display three paintings in our Café by renowned artist, neighbor, and friend Alan Bray. The trio of paintings, called “Syd’s Scarecrows,” will be on display in our Café this week and next, Thursday through Saturday, for their world premiere.
Alan has long admired Sid’s inventiveness when creating scarecrows for the fields. They aren’t the typical straw-stuffed characters. A closer look reveals a combination of cast-off clothing, repurposed plastic bottles, and technology (like motion-sensitive spotlights), for startling the critters. After being puzzled as to how to render the scarecrows, Alan landed on an approach reminiscent of Europe’s 15th and early 16th-century portraiture, when the subject was painted in front of a landscape that was familiar to the person. “Syd’s Scarecrows” depict, in meticulous detail, three of the farm’s stalwart crop-guards– each in front of a landscape in our fields. Alan’s portraits reflect not only our scarecrows’ utilitarian purpose, but the unique “personality” of each character.
These three paintings will join other paintings by Alan for a one-person show at Caldbeck Gallery, 12 Elm Street, Rockland, Maine. The show will be opening on Friday, Sep 4th. Until then, come see these characterful portraits before they hit the art world!

Here it is, the very end of May, and we’re still wearing flannel and long pants…and keeping the gloves within reach! Maybe a break in the action will bring in some warmer weather. 🤞The Café and Stand will be closed until next Thursday, June 4th, when the doors will reopen from 11:00- 2:00.

👉Remember that we will be hosting a representative from FarmShare this coming Monday, June 1st, from 10:00- 2:00, to help seniors sign up for the 2026 FarmShare season. If you have Internet access, sign up can also be completed on the Maine Senior Farmshare Program website.

Until we see you again, stay safe!
