Maybe there are only four degrees of sip-aration in wine?

This beautifully-colored Folk Machine label features a different old camera each vintage from Landon Dowlen's collection (a friend of Kenny Likitprakong who designs his labels). It celebrates 90+ year organic old vines of the Valdiguié grape in Redwood Valley which has somehow survived the tides of fashion. Funny thing is.... Valdiguié was mistaken for another grape for much of California's history - it was called Napa Gamay until 1980!

Which brings us to image 2; which is from Arnot-Roberts but made from actual Gamay (which is also known by its full name Gamay noir a jus blanc, or Gamay Noir).

That grape is the famous grape of Beaujolais, which brings us to picture 3 from Jean-Paul Brun's Terres Dorées estate. This is his old vine bottling from his home vineyard in Charnay. Brun is one of the region's natural wine flagbearers and recently, he started making a pét-nat style Gamay called FRV 100 - in French it reads like effervescent 😉. It's actually based on the wines of Bugey-Cerdon, which takes us to picture 4 (last one, I promise!)

The ultra-unique méthode ancestrale rosés of Bugey-Cerdon in the alpine Savoy region are softly sweet, sparkling and low-alcohol. This 2019 vintage bottling also contains Gamay, as well as Poulsard - a rare grape which is perhaps most famously found in nearby Jura.

The shadows are getting a little longer, but this Arnot-Roberts rosé 2020 is looking mighty summery. 😎 This one is joining our inaugural line-up. Stompy is GOING LIVE later next week - stay tuned :)

This drop is a beloved soulful wine, the base of this Rosé is Touriga Nacional (the red grape responsible for Port!), grown at two special vineyards. Luchsinger vineyard is in Clear Lake AVA at 1400', and the Spencer family's St.-Amant vineyard is in Amador County in the Sierra Foothills. Both are high-elevation sites with cooler climates, perfectly suited to this gently made, wild-fermented, totally un-oaked and vibrantly fresh Rosé.

In 2020, as a result of the fires in wine country, they picked their Watson Ranch Cabernet Franc, Barsotti Gamay and Grenache early to avoid fire and smoke damage, blending it into this Rosé instead of fermenting them as red wines. Through the challenges of the August fires, they managed to pull victory from the jaws of loss, making even more complex wine and at a refreshingly low 11% alcohol level.
