McHenry Vineyard

McHenry Vineyard Rare, handcrafted, small production superb Pinot Noir from the Santa Cruz Mountains. This first vineyard died of Pierce’s Disease in 1993.

With the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 scientists from UC Davis sampled grapes from numerous sites throughout California to establish the ideal match between region and varietal. At the top of Bonny Doon Road, they discovered the perfect place for Pinot Noir and this ultimately lead us to plant McHenry Vineyard in the early 1970’s. Dean McHenry, the founding chancellor of UC Santa Cruz inspired th

e family and soon Linda McHenry became a UC Davis-trained viticulturist, Henry McHenry added enology to his training as an anthropologist, and the whole family became involved. The resulting vines produced some extraordinary Pinot Noir such as the 1984 vintage that won numerous awards including best Pinot Noir in the state and the California State Fair, and gold medals for the 1988 and 1989 vintages. In 1997 a second generation of our family, Lindsay, Annie and Ian McHenry, helped us replant. This was the last summer of Chancellor Dean McHenry’s life. This is a magical spot for Pinot Noir and we do everything we can to honor the magnificent fruit from our tiny vineyard. We pick into small boxes, usually 24-26 degrees Brix, near 1.0 acid and low pH. The primary fermentation takes place in 4 open containers. The wine is gently pressed in a classic basket press, and rests for almost two years in Francois Freres French oak barrels. We planted the second vineyard with four clones of Pinot Noir – Pommard, Swan, Dijon 115 and Pinot 13. The Swan and Dijon are on their own roots. The vines are not irrigated until after harvest. The warm days and cool nights of the mountain yield grapes of superb balance and quality; these grapes yield graceful, soft, earthy and luscious wines. We began our careers as vintners in the vineyard and it is the vineyard that retains our first loyalty. Great wines are born from the careful tending of vines in ideal soil and climate. Our wines are for those interested in rare, handcrafted, small lots of superb wine. We hope you enjoy our wines as we do – for the full delicious flavor characteristic of the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Wild cranberry, pomegranate and sagebrush aromas show on the nose of this bottling. The palate has a dank pine needle kick along with tart cranberry and gamy meat.

In September I (Annalisa) had a lovely conversation with Krista Simmons of Fork In the Road Podcast and Shalini Sekhar, the amazing winemaker at Neely Wine. We talked about the impact of the CZU fires on the region and industry, and Shalini gives a superb definition of smoke taint. We touched on farm worker safety, climate change, and being women in the wine industry. A nice listen with a glass of wine.

Friends,

Thank you to all who have reached out to us during this difficult time. All of your words and memories have brought us moments of brightness and a feeling of purpose. Many of you have offered to help, and we are grateful beyond words. At this point, as much as we would love to be getting our hands dirty with the actual business of rebuilding, we are instead assessing damage and realizing the full scope of our loss. If you feel inclined, we are humbly asking for support as we begin to enter the next era of our beloved winery.

First, we want to thank all the people who have reached out to offer support to the winery. We appreciate it. And to those who have inquired about purchasing wine, we apologize for the delay in response. It has taken longer than expected to figure out how to fulfill orders. But, we will be in contact with each of you shortly to move forward with your order (including all who have reached out by phone, email and Facebook). Thanks for your continued support and your patience, it's been a hard few weeks.

As many of you know, our winery and land have been surrounded by the vast and destructive CZU Lightning Complex Fire. We have been able to do a brief assessment and are sad to share that our winery and cabin have burned down. We have lost our 2018 and most of the 2019 vintages, our library of old wines, and all of our wine making equipment. On the positive side, crews were able to save my grandparents’ home and our vineyard. We are not sure if they were the brave local brigades and volunteer fire fighters made up of Bonny Doon neighbors or the Cal Fire teams (or a combination of all of them). We are especially grateful as we had just replanted 20% of our vineyard this year. The vineyard sustained some minor damage, and we lost our well systems as well. The 2020 crop is intact, but is likely lost due to smoke damage. The beautiful redwood forest on our land is thought to have been burned as well. We are hoping that the majestic tree line that is pictured on our label will survive. We are heartbroken. This land is special to our family, and we will do our best to rebuild and keep alive the McHenry family tradition of making great Pinot noir.

The fire is still burning in Bonny Doon and many homes are still at risk. Our heart goes out to all of our neighbors who have suffered losses. We are grateful to be a part of this extraordinarily compassionate, brave, and resilient community.

Thank you for all of your well wishes and support.

-Annalisa, Brandon and Henry
