Shalom Honeycomb

Shalom Honeycomb Hello, my name is Deanne Edwards and I founded Shalom Honeycomb in 2016. I started gardening organically in 2010. So, I set out to get my first colony.

Over the years I have focused on creating a thoughtful and nourishing garden made up primarily of edible plants. In 2015 I noticed that I had very few pollinators, and I began to wonder what it would be like to bring my own pollinators into the garden, meaning a beehive. I was well aware of colony collapse disorder and the rapidly decreasing bee population. The thought of being part of a movement

which supports the health and welfare of the bees felt just right. I went to a class on beekeeping and met other like minded folks who were out to rescue bees and away I went, joining a group of primarily middle aged ladies who were dedicated to rescuing bees. As my bees began to produce an abundance of honey I started sharing the honey with family and friends and loved sharing a piece of comb in each jar. I now manage multiple hives and have rescued many pollinator colonies that were in danger of being destroyed.

Shalom is a Hebrew word simply translated as “peace.” Shalom, derived from the Hebrew root shalam, which means to be safe, complete, to make happy. Shalom holds rich definition drawn from many traditions to mean prosperity, welfare, tranquility and wholeness, not only a for the individual but also for the whole world. Shalom describes the feeling I get when working with the bees and in the eating and sharing their honey.
