Summer 2013, almost exactly 13 years ago to the day, my amazing friend and realtor Shannon Shaffer showed us this rural mountain property. I saw a so much potential but there wasn’t a lot (flora/fauna wise) going on. While looking around I saw a single Monarch butterfly floating around and thought it was a good sign.
In these 13 years I have planted the right (native) varieties of milkweed, took in caterpillars from someone nearby who decided to tear her tropical varieties out, covered those babies when they went into their chrysalis, so nothing would eat them. They never made it (turned black and kind of liquified. I think that’s the result of their nemesis parasite?)
Today, I was watering my patch of common milkweed that has huge flower heads ready to pop, and I noticed something was eating the leaves. I said, to myself, “wait, who eats those??? Ohhhhh” A whole flower head was missing. 😳 After checking them out, I found 6 tiny babies and about a dozen eggs. I also saw the greedy Robin that has been feasting on all of my berries, so I covered them all with bird net and will hope. Not 2 days ago I was lamenting that I’ve never hosted them, even though I put out the welcome sign and John said he thinks we’re too far up from their path. I’m not a patient person, so this feels like an epic win for me. Any tips on keeping them safe, appreciated. Woohoo!
