The Ben Lomond Wine Company was one of the most prestigious and internationally recognized wineries in the Santa Cruz Mountains during the late 19th century. It played a pivotal role in transitioning the region from a wild logging frontier into a world-class viticultural area.
The company was formally established in 1883 by Frederick William Billing, a German-born artist and businessman, and his partner John W. Packard (a mining magnate from Utah).

The Ben Lomond Wine Company is remembered as the spiritual predecessor to the Ben Lomond Mountain AVA (American Viticultural Area), which was established in 1987 by Jim Beauregard.
Modern wineries in the area, such as Beauregard Vineyards, continue to farm some of the same historic ranch lands once associated with this 19th-century wine empire.
