Mini Lesson Monday: The Right-Hand Turn

Why spend so much time teaching a simple right-hand turn?

Because it’s much more than a turn.

For horses that tend to crowd, rush, or cut in front of their handler, a well-understood right-hand turn can help create space, encourage thoughtful movement, and support emotional regulation. Instead of rehearsing “pushy” patterns, we’re building new movement patterns that invite balance, awareness, and connection.

I also consider right-hand turns an important safety behavior. A balanced horse should learn that reinforcement isn’t only available for coming toward the handler. They should be just as confident moving away, yielding space, and staying connected while increasing distance.

I’ve decided I can not not be apart of these moments. My heart is so overwhelmed, all I can say is thank you, the well being of our beloved friends, the horse.

Why I Love Hosting the Learning Lab

I’m not trying to go viral with this video. 😊

I’m simply sharing something I’ve become genuinely excited about.

One of the things I love most about horse behavior and positive reinforcement is that there’s always more to learn. Some of the best conversations start with a simple question about a horse’s behavior and lead us into a much deeper understanding of what that horse may be experiencing.

In this video, I share why I love hosting the Learning Lab discussion group which includes weekly video lessons on a focused subject through the Shawna Karrasch Equine program.
These weekly focused conversations have become one of my favorite parts of the week.

We have to train “manners” and/or safety focused behaviors around our working spaces. That’s just good training doesn’t matter what method you use to train. We do however find ourselves with different situations that need to be trained in R+ . NEVER in my 25 years of traditional training did I need to figure out how to safely get horses out of turnout because everyone wanted to do a session. But here I am.
Horses are motivated differently with clicker training, they think differently about the training and that means we too have to think differently to solve our problems. Here I am solving my “different than traditional” problem of getting horses out of turnout for a training sessions.

I’m excited to be mentoring inside this program—
Ever feel stuck with your horse and wish you could just ask someone in the moment?

Not another video. Not another webinar.
A real human. A real conversation.

That’s what this mentorship program is about—support, guidance, and a community that actually shows up when things get hard.

Message me if you want to chat about whether it’s a good fit.

Meaningful connection and ethical training, rooted in science for the modern horse.

I did a thing.

I’m a certified graduate of the Shawna Karrasch Equine Professional Certification Program 🎉

With that milestone, I’m officially rebranding as Whole Horse Forward Equestrian Training — a whole-horse,approach that blends positive reinforcement, enrichment, and practical, real-world application for equestrians and professionals.

To celebrate, I’ve launched my new website and my first free mini-course:
“The Power of Asking: Oral Medication Without Resistance.”

If you’re curious how positive reinforcement can become a doable, practical part of your everyday work with horses — and how membership in the Shawna Karrasch Equine Program supports that process — this course is for you.
