POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Yellowstone Buffalo Technician will work closely with employees of Yellowstone National Park’s bison program. This individual will work primarily at the Stephen’s Creek quarantine facility in Gardiner, MT to assist in the care of buffalo in the Bison Conservation and Transfer program. The program takes bison from the wild herd, places them in fenced pastures near the park boundary, and tests them repeatedly for brucellosis until animals are certified as clear of brucellosis. The buffalo are then transferred to Tribes across the country. Duties include assisting in brucellosis testing, learning and utilizing low-stress handling techniques, general husbandry tasks, and facility maintenance. The technician will operate large farm equipment, repair fences, weld, feed animals (daily), move animals on-foot in pastures, and monitor herd health. Occasional work in the park (10-20% of time) may be required monitoring the wild herd, such as completing counts, collecting genetic samples from bison and using radio telemetry. Hard-working individuals interested in Tribal buffalo restoration and learning about federal buffalo management are encouraged to apply!
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
● Must be a minimum of 18 years old.
● Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
● Must have a current driver’s license and reliable transportation.
● Able to work 80 hours over a 2-week period.
● Able to work primarily outdoors in harsh conditions, including extreme sun, biting insects, and cold.
● Interest in Tribal buffalo restoration.
● Interest in occasional field work, including hiking over backcountry terrain and potential backpacking trips.
● Work experience in the natural resource field is preferred, but not required.
