Tonight! Tuesday, September 1st — come out and see what dishes John Levy and his team have put together for you to try out. Entrees off the experimental menu are available free of charge as long as you provide us your feedback about the dishes. The bar is also open for any cocktails you might desire and regular menu items are also available if you’d like to order one of your favorites.

Chris Bohl is a musician living in the Northern Foothills of the Adirondacks. Before moving to the North Country, he taught music in Virginia Public Schools for 15 years. Recently, he has been facilitating community drum circles. Chris feels that music is a force for healing and has spent the past few years using his skills for that purpose.

Karen Loffler has been playing and singing since childhood. She has played in a variety of places in the North Country and some small festivals in FL. For the past few years, she’s been writing and playing original songs that touch your heart.

Together Chris and Karen are the River Valley Duo. Their strong harmonies and acoustic sound bring original, traditional, and cover tunes to sweet places.

Their first release, Live at the Hootinanny, is available on most streaming platforms.

A favorite of locals and travelers alike, The Belvedere Restaurant has been providing a place at the table from prohibition to present.

Nearly a century of history has a way of leaving its mark...

Since Hotel Saranac opened in 1927, the spirit of the Roaring Twenties has remained woven into its halls. With nearly a century of stories, it seems the past has found a few ways to linger.

Among the most enduring is the story of Howard Littell, whose connection to the school that once stood here has become part of Hotel Saranac’s history.

Some stories fade with time. These seem to have stayed, adding another charming chapter to ours.

Lydia Martin Smith, born on this day in 1834, was a central figure in early Adirondack history, best known for running Paul Smith’s Hotel alongside her husband, the famed wilderness guide and entrepreneur Paul Smith. While her husband became the public face of the enterprise, Lydia's tenacity and business acumen allowed her to handle the demanding operations of a remote 19th‑century hotel. She raised their three children while managing the high‑profile Adirondack resort that drew visitors from across the country. Her husband became a legend, but Lydia was the one who made the legend real. Her work was essential to the hotel’s reputation and growth, yet like many women of her era, her contributions were largely overlooked.

“Now we know that mountain women can be heroes,” was the line in a Peggy Lynn song that first caught the attention of Lisa Genier, Adirondack Council Digital Content and Legislative Specialist. The song, fittingly titled Lydia, introduced Lisa to Lydia’s story and it stuck with her.

“Maybe it’s my deep love for the Adirondacks and its early history,” says Genier, “or maybe it’s the reality that strong, resilient, successful women were not—and still are not—given the recognition they deserve. I suspect it’s a little of both.”

Today, Lydia Martin Smith’s legacy stands as a reminder of just how much early Adirondack history was built on women’s skill, labor, and resilience—often without recognition.

Albert Einstein loved sailing. There was just one problem: he couldn't swim.

During one of the six summers he spent on Saranac Lake, Einstein's sailboat capsized—and a 10-year-old local boy came to his rescue.

But that's only part of Einstein's remarkable Adirondack story. He came here for privacy, sailing and music, spent summers at Knollwood on Lower Saranac Lake—and was there when news of Hiroshima reached him in August 1945.
