There’s something special about watching local businesses grow together.

Bread Bandits welcomed Ootopia onto their shelves in Sarasota and gave our young brand a place in a community that believes in supporting the people building something here.

Now, as Bread Bandits opens its newest location in Lakewood Ranch, we’re proud to be growing right alongside them.

You can now find Ootopia at both Bread Bandits locations — Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch.

We’re grateful for the shelf space, but even more grateful for the relationship behind it.

Nothing about introducing this award-winning Greek extra virgin olive oil has felt effortless. Most people see the bottles and assume they sell themselves. The reality is, like anything worthwhile, it takes a village.

Meeting Heather and the team at Cottages on the Key was a blessing. We had been living and working in the same seaside community for years, yet our paths had never crossed.

In 2023, I stepped out of my comfort zone and onto a path that became more of an obsession than a job. I was learning as I went, and the feedback wasn’t always easy. When you start your own business, people will often share their opinions before they share their support. You learn quickly how important it is to have a vision — and protect it.

Heather and her team were different.

She wanted to know everything about Ootopia Estates Extra Virgin Olive Oil and saw an opportunity to introduce it to the people choosing Sarasota, Siesta Key and our surrounding islands for vacation experiences they will remember for a lifetime.

I can’t put into words what this means to our little brand.

There is a Greek virtue called philoxenia — literally, “friend to a stranger,” and more broadly, a love and generosity toward strangers.

Throughout this journey, it has often been strangers who stepped in with encouragement when I needed it most. In many ways, that same spirit is what got me into this business in the first place — and it continues to drive me every day.

We’re grateful to call Cottages on the Key a partner and even more grateful that this partnership began right here at home.

I hope you all have been researching Ootopia, Ermioni and the beautiful glass bottles surrounding our award-winning olive oil. Remarkable people make our olive oil possible and we all love knowing our supporters are on the same quest for tasty/healthy ingredients for the kitchen. Pictured is our Koroneiki. We just reached 1,000 followers on Instagram!!! You’re not crying, I’m crying.

Anyone with a small business birthed out of a passion knows how meaningful this is. I’m so incredibly grateful you found us and made the choice to get to know Ootopia better.

Producing and packaging is handled in Greece but the daily grind of introducing this beautiful olive oil is handled by a former restaurant guy and some incredible supporters.

We wouldn’t be where we are today without the passion and dedication of the people in the town of Ermioni, Greece and the people I have met who take Olive oil as seriously as everyone should.

I’m still handwriting thank you cards to our supporters and I can’t imagine changing that approach. If you ever need to talk olive oil with someone in the trenches, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Quality food should never run into friction between the source and your table.

Olive oil… on ice cream?

It might sound unexpected, but a drizzle of exceptional extra virgin olive oil over vanilla gelato is a classic pairing throughout parts of the Mediterranean.

The rich creaminess of the gelato meets the fresh fruit, gentle pepper, and aromatic character of early harvest olive oil in a way that’s surprisingly balanced.

Sometimes the simplest ingredients create the most memorable experiences.

The Peach
When we were very young, my partner and I met near a peach tree next to Matt’s house a street over from where I was living. My brother and I left our block to explore the neighborhood and Rand into these two kids who weren’t sure about us as much as we weren’t sure about them. We started throwing peaches at one another in what is fondly remembered as “The Peach Fight”.

Fast forward to late 2022 and I was at a place in my career I had always dreamed of when something went abruptly wrong. I had been working for a very large company running the best steakhouse in town and a series of events pushed me to believe I had to leave, destination unknown.

Clint and I had stayed friends after the peach fight and knew one another well. He jumped on a plane and flew to Florida from Texas and said he was in on anything I want to do. He believed in me.

A few months later, I told him I wanted to import olive oil. He said “I’m in”. This was the guy I would go into ponds and creeks with to find gold balls to sell back to golfers. He has a relentless spirit about him and he loves trying new things.

Today is our 100th post on Instagram and this post is for my partner. Without him, I would not have had the encouragement to try something new. Our journey with Ootopia and importing and distribution has just begun but our friendship has been tested for decades. Cheers to Clint and Matt for taking the “L” in that Peach fight. Hold onto your friends when you realize who they are.

Sometimes the best conversations happen by accident.

On my way to restock Ootopia at Bread Bandits, I noticed someone reading The Blue Zones Kitchen by Dan Buettner.

That book was one of the resources that sparked my own curiosity about olive oil years ago.

We started talking, and he smiled as he said he was beginning to realize that many of the foods he had always believed were healthy… really weren’t.

I remember that moment.

It’s the same realization many of us have when we begin learning about extra virgin olive oil. We discover that not all olive oils are created equal, and that where they’re grown, how they’re harvested, and how they’re produced all matter.

Our estate in Ermioni, Greece isn’t far from Ikaria—one of the world’s best-known Blue Zones. While no single food is a shortcut to longevity, the Mediterranean way of eating has inspired generations of people to value fresh ingredients, shared meals, and exceptional olive oil.

Funny how a loaf of bread, a good conversation, and a great book can remind you why you started this journey in the first place.

I bring Bread Bandits on the road to Olive oil tastings. I’m proud to share a little taste of what Sarasota, Fl has to offer and sometimes I think we don’t know how good we have it having them in our town doing all they do.
